I've been keeping my eye out for an inexpensive one because ideally, I would like to make a case that holds three or four 1U units.

The Hammond box I used is huge but I wanted to make sure the circuit was something I would use before I sank a lot of $$ into.

I just don't understand what makes a simple 1U box worth over $50?

Wow, that's a great price Henry.

The problem is my transformer is almost 2" high.

Unless I can find a smaller transformer that outputs 306v.

In all honesty I've used one of them before. They're kinda flimsy and cheap.

I use these 1u racks below for Remote switching systems (like a CAE switcher's) and they're heavy Duty. If you'd be using a Toroidal or a standard trafo they might be a tight fit as they're only 8" deep as opposed to the longer HAD used type. They'd be great for "The Button" though.

They're a little bit more $ but a better bang for your buck:

With a little Texas ingenuity (i.e. a hammer) you could easily knock that transformer down to 1.62" :D.
