2nd Gen Build Started (that didn’t take long…)

Another general question:

Is that coax going from the manual switch to the DC negative terminal on the relay board? It appears to be, but I don’t understand why? If so, I imagine it would ground at the switch end on the buss?

I’m about at the point of making my shielded cables. Not necessarily connecting them all, but a few that make sense - so I’m trying to understand the ins and outs vs just painting by numbers like I did most of last build.

Good for you, this is exactly what you should be doing. The switch grounds that end of the coil in the manual position to energize it, or sends it on to the footswitch jack in pedal position. I don't think that needs to be coax. It will have clean, quiet, regulated DC on it.

I might be catching on… a little - and slowly, lol.

I’m using a lot of your 3rd gen build as reference material. The photos are really helpful. Any tricks to the 2 into 1 splice with the neutral wires? My gut tells me to follow the guidance I got for the OT plate lead; but thought I’d ask since you popped in.

I used the ground lift switch to land the power cable, same as what HAD did.

I was thinking “with regulated power and a relatively short run - why coax?” Trying to decode as much as possible with what I have picked up while still following the layout. I almost get a little worried asking “why” regarding the layouts because you and Tony are pretty much at the top of this craft and I’m just some goober trying to figure it out as I go. Who am I to question, lol?

Ahh, that explains it, lol.
Thought I was losing my marbles and went back and looked just as you posted the updated pics.

Thought about adding a piece of hardware as a place to join them, but I’ll probably just splice - unless there’s a better way with tag strips or something. Still researching…

I'm about to start work on a 2nd gen with switches like that. How did you implement deep switch configuration with a toggle switch instead of a slide switch? I'm trying to double check everything before I start installing hardware and soldering.

There are more than a few ambiguities in the layout drawings, but they are a great resource. As I mentioned on your 102 build thread, referring to both a layout and a schematic is the best approach, and even then make sure that each connection makes sense as you make it. With knowledge of electronics and experience, small errors and omissions in the drawings are easily spotted and corrected as you go.

I’ve been bouncing around not using one particular schematic - which I think gets me turned around sometimes. The one I use most is the “Generic non-HRM 3rd Gen” drawn by mdroberts1243. Do you think this one is adequately applicable to my current project or would you suggest a better one?

Admittedly, I need to pick one and stick with it. I am getting better at following them - most of the time, lol. It is certainly like learning a different language.

Yes, I've seen people get into trouble trying to blend different layouts or schematics. The MDRoberts 3rd Gen schematic is a good one to use. The only difference from the 2nd Gen layout that I can see is the caps on the bass pot.

One other difference is the footswitch jack and manual/pedal switch wiring is shown correctly ;^)

Relay all wired - lots going on there. I’m liking those Hoffman boards. Cheap, well made, and easy to use. One day I’ll try to build my own - maybe…

Starting to feel some familiarity with the process now that I’ve conquered my space issues.

Also spent some time prepping my suede. Did a test piece just to make certain my glue works ok with the pig skin. Covering might be tomorrow’s project - we’ll see.
