hi
just bought a couple of blown altec 417 speakers on ebay and I need to find out the model number before I can get a recone kit.
anybody have any idea which these are ?
and where I might get the right recone kit ?
have spent quite a while searching on the web but havnt found anything yet - especially getting a kit in the UK

Early OEM version of the 417. Same as the more usual 417-8x but with a 16-ohm voice coil.

Reconing them is half the story : the speakers should be fully checked and the Alnico magnets recharged.
and where I might get the right recone kit ?
Great Plains Audio, a company created by Altec alumni. Their recone kits are by far the best available today.

Those speakers are the equivalent of the 417-8C...not A, B or H...but at 16 ohms. Used to find them a lot in Ampeg 4x12s. I have one myself...and a mint 8-ohm. 8)

You should be able to recone in either ohmage. You could call A Brown Soun (Tone Tubby) to get good info. tel 415.479.2124
