Dumble-D'lite clean channel into AB763 reverb? SSS Lite?

Post by topbrent »

Long time lurker.... Be gentle....

I am curious how the basic Dumble clean channel sounds when run into the typical twin/super reverb style fender style reverb section.

A few years back I built a quaisimodo style...Allen Accomplice with the 40 watt iron into a hacked 68 bassman chassis that I have modded, re-modded and experimented with a lot.
It's been a while now, and the soldering iron misses it's hot dates with this amp, so...

Lately, I have had the itch for some dumble style tones, and I am curious if a basic simple Dumble D'lite-ish clean channel would play well with the AB763 style reverb section and PI.

To clarify, I would be replacing the AB763 V1 preamp values with dumble style V1 preamp values +PAB switch then on into the basic Blackface fender reverb and PI. Good, bad, decent sounding?

For tonal reference, and end goal tone:

Normster's African Heritage clip is a tone I love:

The goal is to cop some decent elevator/dentist-smooth Jazz type clean tones ie jeff golub, chris cammozi, chuck loeb.
+
be able to get me anywhere near those wonderful SSS SRV- (or dare I say) Mayer thick clean tones.
----Poor man's Steel String Singer?

Constructive advice and opinions are welcome.
Ie, skyliner or BM tonestack choices, High or Low plate resistor choices, local feedback or not....

Thanks guys! :D

Contemplating using something like these values for the tonestack and V1

Personally with my D'Lite, I like the clean tones alright but what it really shines at is the overdrive section.

That's why they call the amps Overdrive Special's.

I don't feel the clean channel is a glassy, chimey as say, a Fender Twin type tone.
But since it has a pre gain volume and a master volume you can overdrive the output a bit even in clean mode and have quite a bit of hair on the clean channel.

Don't let that smoke out!

The OD is what these amps are famous for, typically. However, there are some fine examples of cleaner dumble tones out there.

The Two-Rock custom sig reverb has some beautiful clean dumble tone.

Hi,

i just made my sf super reverb into a d-style amplifier with great success. But I need to point out is, that the super already sounded extra ordinary with the celestion 10s speakers it came with. It is fitted with a 5u4 rectifier which makes the attack very nice, so everything is there to make it sound good. I also used any old resistor and capacitor to find out how much these old parts add to the sound, because they drift.

I believe that building the preamp is only one part of the story of a good clean or overdrive sound. The PI in these Amps are of blackface type and it's sounds very different from what you're after. Depending on the speakers in your amp the clean sound might be good right from the start but when you're after a overdrive sound later you might think about other speakers.

But the bottom line is, that everything works, that sounds good to you and trying things out and listening to the result will lead you to the tone you're after. Just start with the preamp and leave the PI as it is und listen to the sound, maybe you'll like it. Take the 100K/1K5 combination with 5uF cathode bypass caps at first and listen to the result. I loved the sound. And use the bright switch as your PAB Switch at first, so you can listen to the diffferent sound without installing relays.

Send some soundfiles when you're finished.

Enjoy the modification. :P

Regards.

IMHO the Skyliner stack gives you a very fat, warm but not very variable clean tone.I personally would recommend a larger Mid cap, I have had very good success with a 33 nF with a 150K slope resistor.I know that this has not been seen in real Dumbles, but it sounds good anyway, very Fender-ish and a little warmer than the 50 nF used by HAD himself.I also feel the feedback loop on V1b tends to lose some sparkle, so I would delete that.BTW I once had the chance to look into a SSS, it had a very Fender-y tone stack, but a 150 K slope resistor, 270 pF Treble cap, 150 pF Bright cap,50 nF Mid cap, also 22 µF bypass caps, if I remember correctly. As I mentioned in an earlier post, gorgeous clean tones, the best I have ever heard

Marcos, thanks for those component values.

Did that SSS you looked at have the V1b local feedback?

I only had very limited time with the amp,so I don´t really know that much about.Took some notes about the preamp, so I am quite certain that it did not have the feedback loop.Hope this helps
