Mercury 045RS-L

Post by skyboltone »

I just bought this Mercury 045RS-L output tranny. Paul pretty much talked me into it over the tweed bassman. Im putting together parts for an ODS.

I assume the 6.6K primarys for a pair of 6L6 output tubes. Anyone using this transformer?

Sure could use some thoughts here.

Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan

Reference primary for a pair of 6L6GC is 4000-4200, 6.6k seems a little bit too high, could be ok only with way more than 500V on the plates, it can be used with 6V6 instead!

This OT is their clone of the famous "Radiospares" Deluxe OT that went out in the first 20 Bluesbreakers amps. There is one on Ebay right now at $405 bucks.

Paul mentioned using the 16 ohm secondary tap with an 8 ohm cabinet and then using the 8K primary tap for 6L6s. At least I think that's what he said, I didn't follow him closely at the time but told him what I wanted and he suggested this OT.

The tranny also has ultra linear taps that he suggested I might want to take a look at. Howard never used them but he sure was never averse to experimenting. Here is a link to Ultra Linear operation.

I think it's notable that UL is not recommended for guitar lead amps because it will lack bite. On the other hand ODS, HRM, and all the rest would seem to be able to dial that in in whatever amounts would be desired. Just something to think about maybe.
