My D'clone is also an OTS, which I have tweaked to insanity in order to get a good strat sound. The problem with a strat is to much lower mid in the pre amp. on way to deal with that is using the OD entrance mod another is to make changes aound the mid pot operation.erwin_ve wrote:Thanks Henry!heisthl wrote:Me likey - does it do other stuff well besides that lead tone?
It's the first time in my modding history possible to use the neck PU of my strat with my D-clone! With bright on I can get a good SRV like tone.
Classic tone stack
I have found that the Classic tone stack (also called the 70's stack) is the ticket to strat friendly sounds. The classic stack being
- mid cap is 47n.
- slope is 100k and
- a 100k mid,
- 250K bass pot with no 1n cap.,
If you want to try this - a quick cowboy trick is to
- Change the 10n mid cap to 47n
- bridge your 150k slope with a 270k resistor - any type will do
- Keep the mid pot under 11 o'clock which is appx 100k
- IMLE there is not much difference between a 500k and 250 k basspot. so leave that out of the equation for now
If you like this - go the full way and change the components
High plates vs low plates
low plates is also a contributer to strat friendly sounds, but so far I have found, that the difference in tone is not that substantial. IMLE the major difference seems to be a higher output (around 4 dbs) from 100k plates, which in effect gives you higher distortion levels from 100k amps. The tones don't seem that different wtih my strat and a closed back 2x12 cab with org. 80s 12G65 cellestions.
