Actually, we could sell clones and advertised them as: "This is NOT a Dumble amp, but actually a better product than the real deal for much less money".
Would that be accurate?

Thanks for looking these up for me ;)

I thought the cupidity meant you were trying to hook up an amp and buyer (like cupid duh).

Apparently HAD has found it more important to spend his time being bitter and pissed than happy and productive. Probably why he knows that casuistry word; heard it from his shrink.

I ran a eBay based drop ship business on eBay for three years. We were selling knock offs of modern furniture designs, with the permission of the trademark owners and some with trademarks that had expired. We ran into enough trouble with people objecting to the listings From this, I have some insight into how eBay polices things and what thier motives are. None of the trademark holders were complaining as we were paying them money, other retailers, our competitors were complaining. You find this info out fast if you are selling in a competitive market.

ANYONE can object to a listing on eBay, it's a matter of filling out a form which only the computer sees. I just had an auction for an Ibanez guitar pulled because I say "like ES335" in the listing. Did Gibson object, most likely not, did some one with a ES335 flag me for sale, most likely.

EBay's only purpose is to avoid being named in potential litigation and they ALWAYS side with the people making the complaint. No human being even sees the compliant or evaluates it's merits. It's purely a business decision. Being named in even the most frivolous litigation costs thousands of dollars.

Yeah that does make sense that a competing seller would flag somebodies auction to reduce the amount of sellers with similar items.

Kind of a chickenshit tactic.

I can well imagine some geeky guy hunched over his keyboard with a trembling hand, just itching to report a competitors ad.

There was a guy on Craigslist that was doing that to a friend of mine that had an ad for a guitar.

I forget how he found out but it appears the other guy had the same guitar for sale and his had a much steeper price on it.
So he kept flagging my friends ad and it would be removed shortly after it was placed.

I forget the reason the other guy used for the flag but this went on until the guy sold his guitar then my friend was able to keep his ad up until it sold.

I notice that some members, more familiar with him, have not responded. One of our greats here, knew the guy before he (clearly) lost it, and prefers to remember him that way. This member is a very generous and talented guy, and I totally respect him as the gentleman he is. He and several other advanced (dare I say guru) types have really done alot for the rest of us, and like I say, I really respect the guy. I hope this post is not offensive, sincerely.

That said - after doing a LOT of reading, and seeing some very interesting youtube vids in which a certain (former, imho) guitar amp visionary provided interesting commentary - well, just - YUCK. Man, what a shame. There are so many great designers/tinkerers (let's be honest) out there who have contributed their variations(!) on the RCA/Fender legacy, and who are honest and HUMBLE (funny rhyme, to me anyway ;) about their work. I don't know - maybe we did this to the guy - it's just such a disappointment. Like some kid who idolizes a great ballplayer, then meets him and the guy spits on him and wants a thousand bucks for an autograph or something. No - I don't know of him spitting on anyone or charging for autographs, so it's not a proper analogy... but the attitude doesn't appear to be that different... anyway, others here are far more well-spoken than I - I especially like the "tissue vs. kleenex" reference. And no, I haven't met him - but enough kids meet the ballplayer and have a similar experience, well, hearsay becomes more tangible.

Fortunately it's not quite so bad as kleenex ("I bought a new guitar Dumble and my folks said it's too loud, so I had to get a small little practice Dumble instead!"). Just imagine the policing around that... All respect to "if you can't say something nice.." but .. once in a while it is ok to share our astonishment (at our fellow's behaviors).

Just disappointed - I wish we all had ***'s memories instead.

FWIW I am pretty sure for reasons/info I won't go into that the correspondence I received was indeed coming from HAD himself...

Again I don't fault the guy for trying to protect what he feels he worked hard for.... I just question what kind of a threat my auction was to the Dumble name and in turn his bank account....of course the fact that I find him to be a total a-hole is irrelevant. Personally I *would* like to hear from some of the folks here who know or knew the guy...maybe he was having a bad day and I have it wrong, I don't know. There certainly are a lot of people celebrating his legacy, he's just not one of them. I kinda asked him that in my email to him, why he wouldn't embrace that and celebrate his achievements. He never answered my question. To think that after he's gone much of his legacy will be on internet forums with anonymous people arguing about the tone Robben Ford gets on "Politician"... kinda sad.

Oh well, I'm out on this topic.

Don't blame HAD. He is obligated to protect his trademarks or else lose them. Use of his name for keyword association to inferior products dilute the value of his name.

Don't blame Ebay. They have been sued more than once for not pulling ads that abuse trademarks in this manner.

In a practical sense, and perhaps more significantly for the average Ebay user, it makes searches all but useless when everyone uses associations or negatives to pop up in keyword searches. If I'm looking for a Gibson, I don't want to sort through 500 "not Gibson", "like Gibson", or "better than Gibson" auctions to find what I am looking for.

This has been SOP by Ebay for a long, long time. Many companies, large and small, routinely monitor and flag auctions for exactly this thing.

hi all

just a perspective here, but what did LEO say when JIM copied his work, hmm?...
excerpt of a conversation...
why don't you just buy an amp?
because it isn't done until i take it apart and build it the right way anyway.

Start saying dumble 5 or ten times and it starts to sound pretty funny itself :D

You could put something about Professor Dumble-dore from Harry Potter books, "accidentally" hyphenating the name.

Do you know for a fact that his name is trademarked or copyrighted?
You stated trademarks, as in plural.
What other item of his is copyrighted.
I thought Randall Smith patented everything under the sun.
