You don't have to dedicate a wire for led power or use anti-pop caps this method works fine and doesn't require the DPDT switches:

hello again.. i most enjoy the pictures .. and schematics...even hand drawed sketches.. have fun.. some are placing the swich xlr on the front ..

Yeah it would probably be more user friendly to have it on the front panel but real estate and aesthetics probably come into play, forcing most builders to put it on the rear panel.
And of course there is the way HAD did it as well.
