Re: 715P caps a big no no?
I am surprised no one has commented on the NTE metallized polyster caps. HAD seemed to switch to these in later amps.
Never tried them personally, but might be worth trying.
I have tried Mallory 150's (a no go), 715's (a no go), 716's (a no go), Xicon MPP (ok) PS series (my favorite).
I have two Hiwatt chassis' that I will build up in the future. One will be done in the premium Sozo's the other in Mojo Dijons, just so I can hear the differences in that style of amp.
I also keep looking at the PIO caps for future mega clean amp ideas.

Gary, what are the 715Ps good for? (There must be something.)

I would think they would be good in a Fender blackface style circuit.jaysg wrote:Gary, what are the 715Ps good for? (There must be something.)
I have heard tales that a 715 makes a killer Mid cap in some dumble circuits. Never tried it myseld.

Re: 715P caps a big no no?
Early on I built a 100 watt 2 channel design where one of the channels was setup like an early ODS 124...The other channel was stock Twin...I bought all PIO caps from Steve @ Angela..I believe they were the Jensen's nice silver leads... I paid over 100.00 for the caps alone..For me the tone was a little dull and lifeless especially in the top end..almost like a veil was thrown over the cab... It also seemed to lose some sustain and fall off the cliff faster.. The main thing was it didn't feel like a guitar amp anymore.. The positive things were the low-end was smooth and soft great!!! and the amp was DEAD QUIET!!!..
They may work in certain spots here and there... Bass cap..NFB side of the PI.. and maybe the input to the PI.. Also tried those Commie caps...Look like the Vitamin Q's in silver green and red all with basically the same results....My findings were PIO caps great in stereo's worthless in Guitar amps!!!

Unless we take into account that different caps have different qualities in different builds. One of the best ways to audition different caps is with a single ended amp
Personally I think this is only a good method for choosing caps for that type of SE amp.
great info!I have tried Mallory 150's (a no go), 715's (a no go), 716's (a no go), Xicon MPP (ok) PS series (my favorite).
it really is a journey, and you just cant farm out the battle wounds

Re: 715P caps a big no no?
Thx, are the 418P's any good for an OD build?
Re: 715P caps a big no no?
They're well liked, but hard to come by. Similar to an M150.adamsapple wrote:Thx, are the 418P's any good for an OD build?

I've always thought to buy the polyproplyne caps
715, 716 and the 6PS for amp builds
I've had no problem in selling my 715P's in .047 Uf 600V
I had 1000's and have sold out and have .022Uf 800V and have
had no problem in selling these for amp builds.

fwiw, the mallory M150 are metallized polyester, the 418P are polyester(AFAIK). SBE does make metallized polyester orange coloured caps that are radial lead retangular, not boxed. Forget the series(sorry). Also, ages ago I bought some of Victoria(Amps) custom orange drops(which were apparently 418P with their own markings) to try in a Marshall and I didn't notice any particular difference compared to other ones which I had used such as 6PS. I mean there wasn't anything negative I could detect but there did not seem to be anything remarkable either(even tried re-orienting them the other way--probably kind of stupid--but got nothing out of it either).
also, Torres sells (or sold at one time) 418P if memory serves. Might take a look.

Re: 715P caps a big no no?
FWIW,i gathered stuf to build a Dlite about 2 years ago and for some reason i made the mistake of ordering 715 caps.Due to the shippng costs to Europe i just put the 715`s in.
Of course i wasn`t satisfied with the amp when i just finished it so later on i ordered the 6Ps caps and the Vishay dale resisors.
This gave me a chance of finding out for myself what the differences in caps and resistors are for me.
I changed a few at a time and recorded myself at bandpractise so i could listen to the results afterwards.
My conclusion is that there are differences all being it small ones.
The biggest difference however is me.How i play.
That was a nice thing to find out.

What about the Cornell Dubilier WMF series of Caps ? CDE tells me they the current equivalent of their older Polyester and foil caps PM series and PKM series , with out the PCB's.
Re: 715P caps a big no no?
Has anyone else found inconsistencies in the 6PS caps? In thte 100 watter I boult last summer I swear some of the 6PS were so bad they ruined the souond of the amp completly. I even tried reversing the direction, no go.
The Xicon MPP's on the other hand are very consistent. My current favorite gigging amp is 100% Xicon MPP and MP and I never felt the need to change a single one of them.
