Open back cabs

Post by pedro »

Hi

at moment I have my ODS thru my 4x12 cab fitted with G12Hs and 2xV30s ( I know you hate them dogears ! )

I tried the amp through my 1x12 18watt combo yesterday with an early Fane 12" and the sound was far smoother and closer to the Carlton/Ford tone.

Ive decided not to abandon my 4x12 but to consider a semi closed ( or is that semi open ? ) back. Also I may swap 2 of the speakers for alternatives - maybe the Red, White and Blues.

Has anyone tried a semi closed 4x12 cab. I have plenty of tolex left from doing my cab so could knock up the 2 back panels pretty easily.

any thoughts ?

cheers
Pete

Hi,

Just a thought before you start construction....the smoother sound you are hearing from the open-backed cabinet might be due to the speaker as much as the cab type. IMHO there is something magic about the sound of Fanes (extended freq. range maybe?) that makes clean sounds from Celestions etc. sound harsh and muted by comparasion. Maybe you should consider putting the speakers you intend to use in the 1 by 12 cab to guage the relative influences of the speaker/cab before you start building. I've used old Fanes in both open and sealed cabs, and both sound very good to me. The advantage of open cabs is that you can place them against a wall or baffle to mimic sealed cabs.
