shielded not always bad..

Post by pedro »

Doing the chopstick test to move various wires about at high volume I found that my wiring between tone stack on the board and panel controls ( I have a large chassis and a large cable run to pots ) was susceptible to some interference which was altering the tone when I moved things around, like a phase cancellation.

I found a local dealer who does large PA installations and got hold of 10m of Van Damme foil shielded stereo low loss cable. Its very small and has good stiff stranded conductors as well as strong earth and foil shield.

I decided to wrip out my stranded stack wiring and replace with the van damme. I was very sceptical given all Ive read and been told about too much shielded being a bad thing potentially.

result - much closer to the grail tone now.... still LOADS of highs and a more focussed tone.

I think my previous wiring was killing some of the tone through phase interference or something. This is a BIG improvement.

the cable is Van Damme 268-001-000 FWIW.

goes to show - its worth messing with internal wiring at volume to see what moving stuff around does. dont forget the chopstick though!

cheers
