High-mid stridency in non-HRM...guitar issue, or?

Post by greiswig »

Hi, all,

I've got an older PRS with a tremolo, and I've tried a couple of different well-thought-of bridge humbuckers to see if I could cope with an issue that the D'Lite really brought to the fore.

If I pay the unwound strings up kind of high, especially the 1st string around the first B, there's a strong, piercing quality to the note when it's first picked. It helps a little to roll off the tone control on the guitar, and even more to roll off the treble control on the amp, but those both seem like an EQ solution to something that isn't just EQ.

I've also tried changing from a G12-65 to a JBL G-125. That actually seemed to help a little, and I'm guessing that the JBL has a peak a bit lower than the Celestion. But it's still there.

You know how when you play a Tele on the bridge pickup, and pluck hard near the bridge, you can get that kind of "smack" off the string? That's what this sounds like. I'm trying to figure out if this might be an issue with my amp, or maybe I just have a guitar that has this character and this is the first amp I've played that I play with less gain, so I notice it more.

Any suggestions welcome!

The Dumble style amp should give you a ping on the attack, but it shouldn't be ice picky. Sometimes lead dress can cause fairly dramatic changes in tone, so can you post some picks of the guts?

Hi, Bob. I'll try to get some in the next few days, but there are some unconventional aspects to the build that I'm sure I'll have to explain.

No problem with me. I've done more unconventional things that I can remember.
