Gil/Dominik, thanks for a great layout idea!!!

Post by Normster »

I've been struggling with a way to keep my circuits aligned with their respective tubes. (Yes, I AM that anal.) My new chassis has 4 preamp tubes on 2" centers so the "standard" Dumble layout with added reverb had things off-kilter a little bit. I just looked at your boards and the way you layed out the Ck/Rk network was just the ticket! I was able to shorten the board by over 1" and regain the circuit alignment. Thanks for sharing!!!

Here's the state of the board so far. I may also move the plate resistors around a little if it helps with B+ routing.

That layout started being used by Dumble in the very early 80s, as far as I cal tell. Note that the way the plate load resistors are laid out, there may be some additional real estate savings. For what it's worth, my preamp boeard measures 7.50" x 2.25".

One word of caution concerning your layout Normster:

The layout of my new 75WODS with Reverb is very smiliar (I hope to be able to take a pic soon):

The PI Input cap and the 150k resistor next to it (from the Reverb section I think) need to be as far away from each other as possible. Otherwise you will get a lot of induced noise into the PI from the Reverb.

Then you will have to make sure, that the Reverb cathode resistor grounds are seperate from the OD and Clean grounds!!!! I had to learn this the hard way.

Run a seperate wire from the Reverb cathode grounds to the corresponding Reverb supply filter cap ground.

Cheers,

Dominik

Thanks, Dominik! I'll make changes as you suggested. Maybe move the reverb cathode to the right side rather than the left side of the circuit?

I noticed the plate load resistors, Gil. It's amazing to me how small a well designed board can be. I think there's also an aesthetic quality that only tube geeks (like me) can appreciate. LOL

I am pretty anal when it comes to aesthetics... but I always also say that a good looking amp doesn't necessarily make a good sounding amp. However, if the amp sounds good and looks good, then it's obviously better. :)

Right on Gil, when i built for Cesar Diaz in 2004, the shots of the amps ( build purpose) were downright disgusting, but as i soon found out, he was more than likely VERY ill during that time frame. And from what i`ve heard they all ROCKED. The first one i built was played by Warren Haynes on the letterman show, you can read the comments from the guy who bought it at Harmony Central. The best one to me was Zak Wyldes CD-30, an older 4 6L6 version, it was SWEET!! Man i`d loved to have met him, i think at the moment the pedals are keepin the family going, and thats really good...

Hi groovetubin!

can you say a bit about the Warren Haynes Diaz? Do you have a schemo?

I heard that it was like a Twin sort of. How would you describe the sound?

Cheers,

Dominik

A guy I know in Denmark, builds DC30 clones. Tone Tubby took one of his amps to the US. and Warren Haynes is said to have played it live a few times. Roumors also says that Santana has tried it.....But I'm sure he'll rather use his Dumbles..

Dominiqe, the guys who are in CONTROL now are VERY happi to SUE THE CRAP outa you if you slight them,( i KNOW) so i cant throw a scizo, but if you must know, it uses (2) output trannies, and looks just like a TR, w/slight mods...here`s pix of outside. The sound, FREAKIN ARMEGEDDON, NO twin sound i assure you, except at LOW volumes, w/NO boost on.

Hi Groovetubin,

thanks for the pics. Was that a regular production amp with just the faceplates missing?

I hear ya concerning the sueing thing. So I understand they do implement proprieatery circuitry or have at least a patent pending or granted? Otherwise I would not really understand the basis for their legal threat.

So is it rather clean sounding, or is it Marshally sounding? Is the Boost a Preamp Boost?

I see the amp you depicted uses 6550 tubes. So each duett uses a seperate OT. I assume the outputs of the OTs are paralleled. Reminds me of the 100W JTM45 of the early days....

Can you say a bit more about the topology? And describe the sound a bit more?

Thanks and cheers,

Dominik (with a K Dominique is a girls name over here!)
  :D
