Clips!
http://www.duke.edu/~bhs3/anotheryou.mp3
Recorded in my dorm room this afternoon.
Ibanez AF120 full-hollow jazz box on bridge pickup (stock Super 58), all volume and tone controls up all the way.
Half-Skyliner tonestack, ceramic and Orange Drop PS caps. Speaker is Weber Michigan 12. Enclosure is like an ODS combo.
Clean pre tube is GE 12AX7, OD tube is a Telefunken 12AX7 I took out of a machine the mechanical engineering department was throwing out, PI tube is RCA 12AX7. Power tubes are Sovtek 6L6WXT+.
Reverb added in GarageBand (10/90 wet/dry mix with Apple AU Matrix Reverb)
I never thought I could get a tone this fat out of the bridge pickup!

Re: Clips!
Sounds excellent. Great playing.
The tone is very even from top to bottom, nice grain and smoothness.
The recording has a slightly distant sound to it, which is excellent IMO, sounds very live and unprocessed.

Re: Clips!
Great tone and tasty playing too! What settings are you using on the amp? I just tried my amp to see if I could get in the ball park...not happening.
Re: Clips!
Very tasty playing, loved the clip. I am curious about what you meant by "half skyliner tonestack?"oldmacman wrote:

Re: Clips!
Volume on 7, 120pF bright on, treble just past 5, middle on 7, bass on 3.5, OD trim on 3-ish, drive between 5 and 6, level up all the way, master on 1.5ish, presence on 6 (.68uF cap on the presence)
The half-Skyliner tonestack is a set of values that dogears gave me. 02 midcap, 270pF treble cap, 25uF Ck's in the clean pre, a .047uF cap from V1B followed by a 220K/100Klin pot into the OD stages, the rest of the tonestack values as in the Skyliner stack.

Re: Clips!
That clip just really hit me as allman bothery... i think its the presence being down which really helps... gives the amp a sorta, back of the room sound while still being up in the mix:)
Re: Clips!
Gil,
That is the stack that is in the wierd amp that Norm cloned..... I can email you if you are not sure which one I refer to....

Re: Clips!
Ben,
That was great tone and even better playing. Very nice!
Which snubs you got on there? You still using the 100/1.5 values, or are you using the more Hybrid A stuff?
Keep em coming!

Re: Clips!
Thanks for the offer, but I just wanted to get clarification on the nomenclature used. Try as I might to like other variations, the "1982" circuit is basically what works for me.dogears wrote:Gil,

Re: Clips!
Thanks! I stole one of the licks from one of your clips - where you play 5-#2-2-7-b7 descending on top of the altered dominant. I love it - it's just far enough from what's expected.
Still using the 270pF snubs and the plate/cathode values from the amp you told me about. Same values as the last clips I posted.
I recorded this stuff to see how much the tone had improved when I changed the caps from silver mica and Weber polyprops to ceramics and Orange Drop PS. Honestly, I was a little skeptical about how much difference I'd see. The difference is obvious, though, and all for the better.
I love the feel of that amp when playing with the hollow-body guitar in a small room. It's so live. You have to be really careful to mute strings so they don't feed back, but at the same time, the attack really seems to match that amp. I have my OD Reverb tweaked for a little stronger attack and a little more rasp, and it does really well with a solid-body guitar.
I've heard people talking about Vishay/Dale metal film resistors for the Rp's. How much difference would this make as compared to the generic metal film resistors I have in there now (1/2W Xicons I think)? I'm guessing not much...

Re: Clips!
Thanks Ben! You flatter me! I love your playing.... Great time and bop sensabilities. Kind of like Grant Green meets John Scofield.
If I were you, I would try out the RN65 resistors. I think you may hear a difference.....

Re: Clips!
Good work oldmacman, great tone and playing !
Re: Clips!
You've got a great sounding amp Ben. Nice playing as well. Only thing that bothers me is the thought of an "oldmacman" in a dorm room. It just doesn't fit. On the other hand, I might have to check the want ads for openings as a dorm assistant.
Re: Clips!
The "old" refers to the Mac, not to the man. It's a name I originally used for a Mac bulletin board and have been using for a long time.
I'm actually a freshman in electrical and computer engineering at Duke.
