Anyone Compared 8 ohm G12H65 to 15 Ohm G12H65 ????

Post by glasman »

I am curious if anyone else has done any comparison with the 8 and 15 ohm G12H65's.

I swear the 15 ohm sounds much better (sampling of about 20-15 ohm and 8 - 8 0hm speakers).

Is it the amp or the speaker?
It could be the amp because by nature you would have to change the impedance of the amp you use for testing which might also cause a change in sound quality. And if you are not changing the impedance of the amp and just swapping speakers then the impedance the amp sees might be a factor in the sound quality although I can certainly believe the same speaker model could sound different due to the impedance it is manufactured for. I suppose the amount or type of wire in the coil at least would be different and maybe the magnet too. I would like to hear more about this.

To the first question.

Multiple amps, multiple speakers. But the same amp design in all cases.

To the second question...

The clarity of the 15 ohm seems a little nicer.

Maybe it is just me (but my Celestion rep said he had heard similar comments).

Well I am not so sure on the impedance but you might be right.

Ahhh never mind. I setup a blind test last night with two identical Glaswerks 112XL cabinets one with an 8 ohm and one with a 15 ohm.

There was no detectable difference in the sound. Used both a 100W and 50 watt head for testing and no touching of the tone controls.

I must have been on drugs the other day. Wait ......I was... had surgery last Friday :).

Gary,

I hope you are doing OK and that surgery went fine.

The OT will sound different depending on which secondary tab is used. The high ohms tab (16 ohms) sounds more alive and more marshall to me. OTOH, I really like the lower imp tabs (2, 4 ohms) for the sound that I'm after.

I do hear a difference. No drugs for me.....

Have fun,

Jelle

The drugs where vicadin the doctor prescribed. I didn't like the way they made me feel so I stopped taking them.

I hope you are doing well. Vicadins eh? Best with a Merlot.

I'm not trying to be a smart-ass but you wrote G12H65. Is that a G12-65 or is there a heavy magnet version somewhere that I need to order immediately? The only reason I ask is because about 6 years ago I had Weber put one of their 1265 cones in a 1230 frame/magnet. Really nice speaker. As usual, I sold it when the amp became something else.

Take it easy and get better soon.

Hi Skip, no you are right. I had to check my stock of 65's and they are plainly marked G12-65.

I stand corrected.

I thought the H stood for "Heritage". So I take it that there is no H on the speaker, but it is the Heritage series G12-65. I seem to remember that these are a reissue of an earlier version. I need memory enhancing drugs to keep up with all the models
