Tube sockets
I just realized I ordered 3 unshielded 9-pin sockets for my 100W HRM build. Is this going to cause me problems? Every D-style amp I've seen pics of has shields. Is it even worth building with those sockets or should I just order some shielded ones before I install them?

My Non HRM 50w doesn't have any shields and I don't see any ill effects, but then, I'm no expert.

Re: Tube sockets
You can get the shields w/bases separately for about a buck a piece.benoit wrote:I just realized I ordered 3 unshielded 9-pin sockets for my 100W HRM build. Is this going to cause me problems? Re: Tube sockets
Are you talking about shields that will work with any socket or just the ones with those little nubs sticking out on the sides for them to attach to?ayan wrote:You can get the shields w/bases separately for about a buck a piece.benoit wrote:I just realized I ordered 3 unshielded 9-pin sockets for my 100W HRM build. Re: Tube sockets
go to tubesandmore.com (antique electronics) they sell shields with shield bases that attach to the same mounts as your existing tube sockets.

Thanks, I did find those. Does anyone else have any opinions on whether they're necessary or not? Is it more of a bandaid type thing?heisthl wrote:go to tubesandmore.com (antique electronics) they sell shields with shield bases that attach to the same mounts as your existing tube sockets.
Re: Tube sockets
Eric Johnson says he can hear the difference when the shield is off on V1.
But mere mortals may not.
Sounds like experiment time!

Can't he also hear if the magnetic fields in the amp's transformers are lined up with Mecca, too?Structo wrote:Eric Johnson says he can hear the difference when the shield is off on V1.

Re: Tube sockets
Sorry for getting in late on this one but it also helps when the tubes don't fall out of the sockets. I've found they sound better that way. The heads I've made have the chassis on the bottom of the cab to get rid of the heat better but I still use the shields. Skip

Re: Tube sockets
EH 12AX7s won't fit in the darn shields anyway. At least not in the chinese sockets.

Re: Tube sockets
Actually, mere mortals CAN hear the difference with the shields installed. The amp will tend to be just a tad brighter with the shields off. Of course, it's such a small difference that it doesn't really matter. I would say if you're going to gig with the amp, install shields to keep the tubes from jostling loose. If it's a bedroom amp, don't worry about it.
