What did I actually build?

Post by ted01 »

Hey gang,

I recently finished building an amp using the schematic titled - "1997 Humble Overdraft Specimen, Revision 1.2". I just went looking for where I got that schematic and I'll be darned if I can find the source. What exactly have I built? (I know, I know, an amp....). Any history on where this schematic came from? Any degree of authenticity? I'll say this, while I'm not a guitar player, I have had several dudes who are players use this amp and they seem to like the sound (might just being polite...).

Just wondering what I built...

You must have built this one (attached). I got that several years ago from RumbleHeaven, now SchematicHeaven.com (I think). I can't tell you it's history, but it's a stripped down Dumble HRM style amp.

Odourboy,

That's the one. Pardon my ignorance, but what does HRM stand for? Anybody else build one of these? Any history?

You just built a Dumble without a Mid-Boost or Rock/jazz switch.

HRM is the tone controls after the overdrive stage.

Thanks guys!! That was a great link and helped me understand what I've done.

What is the most "popular" DIY build? I saw that the #124 was and is referenced often. Is this what most folks are building?

I'm having a blast messing around with this stuff. It makes it easier to understand the theory when ya' got something you can easily mess with.

No one else has responded so I'll take a stab...

124 gets discussed a lot because I think it's a bit of an anomoly but I'm not sure it's all that popular a build. The D'Lite is probably more popular, at least as an initial build. The 6V6 version has more modest transformer requirements so it's a more economical project with lots of people to give advice if you stumble or want advice on mods.

The 101 HRM & non-HRM (schematics posted by HiGain in the Dumble Files section) seem to be popular baseline builds also.

The 100W projects are a more 'serious' commitment - greater expense and complexity (and weight :D ).

My 2 cents
