The Dumble style amp I need....
is..Larry Carlton's clean tone..that ramps up to a bit more hair...not a ton of gain, not much gain at all really....the most a compressed grind ala sonny landreth maybe...
really those two sounds...no more bells or whistles...
..Aside from clones, is there a mod platform that lends itself to something like this?
Thanks in advance...JE

Re: The Dumble style amp I need....
Larry Carlton uses the clean channel mostly, just cranked to the edge of breakup. Sonny Landreth when I saw him, was using Matchless, not Dumble, and had that compressed raw tone.
I'd say you just described a Dumble.

Re: The Dumble style amp I need....
yeah i have never seen sonny live...but my ears tell me dumble, especially his work with john hiatt...
back to my question..looking for a mostly clean dumble tone with just a little bit of gain...would i still need a full monty ods build or can a comprimise be struck?

Since you asked, IMHO, the additional complexity of the OD channel is relatively small and well worth the added tonal flexibility - even if you just use it for a touch of hair. (Not to mention, resale value)

Hi JE!
Check LCs site. LC TV gives a lot of insight regarding his tone and how he gets it. Even with a 5E3 deluxe.
Maybe a slighly dumble-ized F*nder would be the ticket for you.
Some added mids and a bit more compression.
How much volume do you need? I'd go for a D'lite and tweak it a bit. Check bluesmaster PI...
Listen to Billy Yates' clips on youtube... GREAT!

Hey Martin!
Yeah am kinda wondering if a modded fender might be the ticket...
50 watts would be plenty for me...
Best, JE

a 50w bassman would probably do what you want - maybe skyline eq and a switch for nfb in the pre. ? What is your main guitar?

mostly playing a es-339 these days...also fond of a strat with lipsticks...
the idea of a modded bassman is appealing...can you point me in the direction of a schematic for the mods your talking about?

Hi JE!
There used to be some hints for fumbled fenders at schematic heaven. Did not check it lately.
Robben Ford gets some of his famous tones with Twin Reverbs. And some pedals.
Lots of guys around here to modify a Fender.

Yeah I know of the ones on schematic heaven but not being a tech I'm not sure which one would best yield the desired result... things like "skyliner eq" etc are a little greek to me...
