I know this isn't a Dumble question but...
I have a homemade mesa boogie mark II. I love the clean channel which is basically a deluxe reverb but have never been wild about the overdrive channel. I was never able to get any distortion from the clean channel.
I suspect that a real deluxe does have some distortion?
Anyway, if I wanted to go for an amp that retains the Fender clean but also offers some good distortion (preferably preamp distortion), what would you recommend?
Thanks,
Rut.

I don't think that a Deluxe distorts the preamp much at all. I believe you'll see most of the breakup from the PI and power tubes. I believe you'll see the same from a Boogie. When I've played through a Boogie I never found the preamp distortion to be that useful. To get a really decent tone you had to crank the master pretty high, then it was blazing loud.
A Dumble style amp wil not retain the Fender cleans. They have great cleans but far more mids than a Fender. I find that I prefer the Dumble cleans now that I'm more used to them. I find my Super clone to be a bit thin in the mids.
I'm not sure how to advise you other than to say listen to the clips foilks post.

Thanks. I've already built a Dumble clone and like it very much but at times, the Fender clean just seems more suitable in certain situations. I suppose a deluxe with a distortion pedal will work.

FWIW, I played a reissue of the deluxe reverb and it gets pretty dirty at about 1, 2 oclock with hum buckers but cleans up nicely with a volume adjustment. I think you could prob get most of what you want out of that or similar amp, either with vol control, or a volume or boost pedal type o' setup. It gets loud enough without getting stupid loud.rutledj wrote:Thanks. Re: mod suggestions
Thanks. I probably just need to go back over the ckt. I can crank it wide open and still not get distortion. Something is wrong somewhere.
