EH 6CA7s?

Post by dave g »

Two days ago I had a pair of SED 6L6s go poop on me (50w non-HRM w/ Heyboer bassman iron). The heater filament in one of them vaporized or something, reducing the current in that tube to 0 and allowing the other to draw all the bias current....long story short, it wasn't good.

Anyway, I ordered a replacement pair, but in the meantime I popped in a pair of EH 6CA7s I had laying around - WOW! Seriously awesome tone! I'm really considering leaving them in there. Anybody else given 6CA7s a try with good results, or am I just crazy?

I had them in a different sort of amp but they were really nice. There are some things I don't like about EL34's and they seemed a step in the right direction. sh

I've been using these since were first released and they are almost always my favorite EL34-type in any amp I try them. I've heard some report reliability problems but I have about 10 in matched pairs/quads and they have been great for several years. I gigged with them for years too and never a problem.

Strangely...I don't think I ever tried them in my ODS (I'd have to yank them from another amp to do so).

You made me break out a set of EH EL-34's I had gotten some time ago and decided I didn't like in my Bad Cat. Interestingly, they sat much better in my D'Lite. They definitely provided a certain AUTHORITY to the amp. More usable in that amp than the other set of EL-34's I'd tried, which were Valve Art ones that came with the Bad Cat.
