Do you mean the gain stage that comes between the PI and Power Tubes? I've been looking at trying something like that but haven't broken ground yet.
What kind of effect does that have (ie, more crunch? more PT compression?)

I would recommend searching on here to read other's experiences, there should be a pretty good size of posts about the direct coupled cathode follower (SVT/SSS). My understanding is that it is not about providing gain, but rather more current to the grid, as opposed to a typical power amp with capacitors that must charge and discharge with each cycle.

This DC driver tube arrangement has most often been described as providing "extended high end response" though some have also said it can make bass/mids feel more instant and powerful.
