Re: Another Tweddle Dee !
Bear in mind that putting the power tubes into triode mode will increase the screen grid voltage and so should act to increase their dissipation.
Putting a master vol after the phase splitter is typically done to benefit from its gain / tone. Hence it’s not usually seen to be a good match for a cathodyne (no voltage gain and a tendency to an unpleasant overdrive character). Especially so with a type 3 (aka crossline) as the NFB will be using the entire gain of the tube to ‘fight’ the action of the master vol.
A regular type 4 master vol, between the gain stage and cathodyne sections of v2 (as per the original schematic posted), would seem to be the most appropriate arrangement?

Interesting idea and one I will try toofred.violleau wrote: ↑Sun Jun 14, 2020 12:52 pm
Marcus, I also added a line out, in order to drive a second small amp. So far it sounds great, and I think the Dumble setup on channel 1 is a good addition with a lower coupling cap. It tends to make the sound tighter overall and works well with a strat. Agreed a tonestack would help dial the amp with a greater variety of pickups.
Fred.
The line out for me served as way of sending to a wet/dry setup. The line out basically goes to a reverb and delay set 100% wet and then into another amp, I have a volume pedal in front to vary the level which works great.
Also I 've experimented in taking the line out when recording and using 2 note wall of sound impulse software to experiment with different speakers/micing. This also works very well and is something I'm going to do more experimenting with in the near future.

excellent tone! how i hear, it gets that "sweet middle" dumblish character on clean what is difficult to get ,no shrill highs, bass is not falling apart with too much gain.. excellent. a great part on the compression and overall tone is on that vintage OT, and how small is it..i wanted to ask for a "recipe" but that OT cant be reproduced... other parts i see are easy available from mouser PR02 resistors etc.. but OT is a mistery

Re: Another Tweddle Dee !
@bepone, thanks for the kind words! I am not experienced enough to tell how much the old Pine PT is part of the sound. All I know is it is pushed and gets hot when in use. But it sounded glorious indeed! Cabinet choice helps a lot as it feels less congested on a 2x12 ET90 then on a 50 watt celestion.
Did a second build with another old PT from an RCA400, which sounds glorious as well. Seems like this one handles the voltages a bit better (less pushed into extreme). I must say that tweaking the voltages is key. I was not very happy with this second build at first and then tweaked the B+ rail to nail the voltages of my original build. And then it sounded great.
It may not be an exact clone of the previous one as the OT are very different and probably tint the sound a bit, but the spongy feel to it, mid focused sound and bloom is there too. I used the exact same components on both builds, but the trannies. And I got very close the second time. So I would not focus too much on the age of the transformer as much as the voltages on the B+ and specs of the PT and OT (primary and secondary etc..).
For the record, I plan on build a micro version for a friend of mine with a toroidal transformer, I will let you know how I feel about it
Sound is mostly in your hands, how you pick, strength, angle material of the pick, where on the strings, will help you taylor the sound you are looking for. The amp is just a mirror, enhancing certain frequencies.
Cheers!

Re: Another Tweddle Dee !
@fred. thx for the reply.. ee but the OT is the last "filter", good OT remove all the harsh notes from heavy OD and also from the bottom end, controling the bass..so it is easy to tune that amp.. allready is tuned
. i spent so many time in winding my own transformers.. really good "filter" OT is hard to get.you need to have a lot of leakage inductance and parasite capacitance to remove hi-end fizz.. sometimes old iron is spectacular in both ways (bass spectrum, high spectrum) so i think this is the real gem in your amp! i have at home one very bad sounding 5E3, forgoten somewhere..now i need to do something with it , only to find free time (next lock down=
)

Re: Another Tweddle Dee !
@bepone agreed for the OT and I must say on my second build, I used a Hammond 1760E which is "good enough" but nothing compared to the old Pine one.

Today, YOUTUBE WON! I look over and suggested is a vid of Fred playing some amp he made. Let's check it out.
WOW! So, here I am. Marcus and Fred, your amps sound fantastic! Great playing too!
I need this little monster in my box of tricks. It's quite a good one!

Miles, in the past year of online sessions and work I've done in my studio , it's the amp that's had the most use out of the whole collection. I stick a ribbon and a 57 on there in one of those double 121/57 mic clips and into a couple of Neve pre's and twiddle the amp/gtr controls to get what you needReeltarded wrote: ↑Mon Oct 11, 2021 9:39 pm Today, YOUTUBE WON! Hey Miles, glad you liked this little monster!
Did a sequel to it, you may find some vids at the same spot on YT with the latest edition.
Very close to this first one, but OT makes a little difference.
I seem to get every now and then recos on YT of guys of the TAG community, and it's always an interesting moment!
Great playing of a sax player on a Les Paul BTW, you should post more music
Cheers
