Fresh D'Lite ODS build

Post by AnalogDok »

Long story spanning 15 years.
Back when Brown Note was first developing the D'Lite ODS and way before they offered a kit, I bought a D'Lite ODS chassis. I got in on the first batch that was built probably around 2006. It was a group buy and I received a chassis. That was all that was available at first.
Life happened and my chassis got stashed in bubble wrap in a box and stayed there through 5 moves.
I built a bunch of different amps over the years and retired from work. I've completed 6 amps from scratch so far in 2021 alone.
1987X Plexi, JTM50, Supro S6606 Super, Supro 1624T Dual Tone, 5E3, AA1164. I'm in the process of building a SLO-18 based on a Marshall 18 watt power section.
So I'm looking for the next build and a BF Deluxe Reverb is in the works.

Today
I was listening to John Mayer's Sob Rock album, absolutely love his guitar tone and decided to find the old chassis. He plays through those Two Rock amps and a Dumble and the tone is amazing.

I found the chassis and a ton of info I kept over the years on the build but haven't decided on a 6V6 or a 6L6 version. The chassis looks like it did when I first received it. Totally mint condition.
I have another tranny set from a Hammond AO-29 and have built the 5E3 and AA1164 with the same exact trannys. I think the 44 might be cleaner and more true to the Dumble sound though.
The HF voltage measured in working amps on these trannys is 436v due to the fact that they were made for 117VAC and with the modern 125VAC we have, the voltages are elevated. Even the bias voltage is elevated to -49v from -45. The filament is 6.8v and the 5v is 5.3. OK but the 640V @ 300mA, 6.3v @ 5A and 5V @ 3A is a maybe and the OT is for a 22 watt amp. OK for the Deluxe Reverb build but marginal for the D'lite 44.

So to do an ODS-44 I need a different set of transformers. I was thinking a set of Fender Bandmaster transformers might work with this build.

Does anyone remember this build and if so do you have any advice?

Chinese influence?

LOL, I live in China Spring Texas. It's named after a tiny little natural spring they called China Spring that was in a the middle of a chinaberry grove.
So yeah, pretty much all the elements to the Doobie Brothers song, China Grove except China Spring is 193 miles North of China Grove Texas.
Just a play on words and places and a song. My wife is 1/2 ethnic Chinese but 1/2 Indonesian where she was born and raised. She doesn't go near my amps.

The logo is actually mOOn with lowercase M & N, kinda like mOOn car hubcaps.

Here's my D'Lite build log, my first ODS build: https://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27657

I still own this one, and I like its overdrive the best of the five or six I've built.

Nice build,

I'll study what you did there. It's basically exactly what I hope to achieve.

Thanks Drew,

I've decided to use the Hammond Bassman set for the 6L6 D'Lite ODS 44 build.

290EX and 1760L. Easy to get and less than $200.00 delivered.

Thats going to be a fun build! Are you planning on tweaking anything along the way? I've got a D'lite 22/33 and im toying around with the idea of adding a choke and trying to move it in the direction of a full fledged ODS.

I'm in the design phase and haven't even started to check out all the options.
So far I know I want a 6L6 power section and will use Hammond Bassman transformers.

I'd love to get it to the Two Rock sound John Mayer has on his Sob Rock album.
I think that would sound perfect.

I'm going to have to create the relay boards as I don't think they are available anymore.
Going over the parts and what is available is the next task.

Sob rock is such a good album. That’s what brought me back to my D’lite.

I did swap out my 6v6 for 6l6 today and I like it much better. Less muddy, and more well defined.

Hoffman amps sells great relay boards and relay power supply boards. I've used them numerous times and I'm very happy with them.

Lots of photos, schematics and info on using the boards here: https://el34world.com/Forum/index.php?topic=14348.0

100% agree.

I've built two amps myself with them, and loved them.

I went ahead and ordered the relay boards and all the parts to go on them. It'll make it a bit simpler.

Thanks for the heads-up 10thTx

I was the OP on that thread. I bought a mercury magnetics bassman OT and a Tremolux PT from I think Monotone. Never finished the amp though. I am gonna build it after I finish my Princeton reverb.

I got a ton of layouts and stuff I can send to you.

Definitely gonna follow this build. I have the same chassis.
