Success - Up and running!

Post by drpastorbob »

Finished it yestreday. Today we used a variac to bring it up slowly and checked voltages, etc. Then we put in some old tubes and made some bad sounds until we fixed a few minor mistakes and connections (had to replace a bad micro switch).

I have attached a link to youtube showing an old guy (me) playing through a strat in the garage under flourescent lights. We can argue about whether or not it sounds like a dumble, but at least it made sounds.

Now the real fun starts...tuning it up, etc...

Congrats! It sounds a little muffled because of the camera mic, but I can hear some Dumble in der! Good luck with the tuning!

Congrats on the built. Nice to see another old guy building old designs

The tone doesn't sound like typical Dumble to me, but I also noticed you had the treble cranked. Most Dumble players keep the treble at more like 10-11 O'clock. Adjust it as you like it, sounds great.

Nice built, congrats!

now the tweaking starts...

What speaker are you using? I'd just check different speakers before tweaking...

Hum I can't find!

Post by drpastorbob »

When I posted about a week ago, we just got the amp up and running - no smoke and out came the sound (see video). Since then we have been trying to track down a low-frequency hum. I've check all the connections, the grounds, and cleaned up some of the caps, etc. to V1 and V2. I have not yet changed resistors to get V1=V2=200V. Any ideas to help me narrow it down? I also seem to hear some low-level "motorboating".

Thanks in advance.
