Thinking Through Sourcing PT/OT for D-Lite-ish Build

Post by turtle441 »

I'm about to start my first Dumble-ish build. Current plan is to start with the D-lite design and then start tweaking the preamp until I hit what's right for me. I was orginally thinking I'd stick to the D-lite 22/33 design because, to be honest, that's likely as loud as I'll ever need. However, I'm intrigued by the idea of a D-lite 44 where I could tweak the bias resistor and run EL34's. While I'll likely never need that much power, I know that my auditory biases have always leaned towards EL34 poweramps.

With all of that said, I'm at the point where I'm looking to source transformers. Based on documentation that I dug up on this site, it looks like the original D-lite transformers all had a 325-0-325 secondary running at 300mA, the D-lite 44 one just had beefier filament strings. I'm not seeing any version of this currently on the market (and thus far, Heyboer hasn't returned my voicemail). If I limit myself to 6V6's and 6L6's, I should be able to pick up a standard Showman PT (325-0-325 @ 200mA), as by my math 3 12AX7's and 2 6L6's should pull somewhere around 130-160mA, depending on OT impedance. If I wanted to keep the 650V secondary voltage, the closest PT I'm seeing would be a Showman 100 PT, which seems like overkill, but could handle the 250mA or so we'd expect running EL34's, and has the beefy heater supply to handle the increased current. Any other suggestions I should look at?

I've looked at OT's as well, but seems like there are plenty of options. If I stick with 6V6/6L6, the standard showman PT should work. (4k primary) It doesn't have the multiple primaries like the D-lite one did, but I should be able to adjust which speaker tap I'm using to make sure the reflected primary's in the right range. It gets trickier if I want the flexibility to use EL34's, but by my thinking, I should be able to get by with a Marshall 50W transformer, right? With a 4k-ish primary, could handle 6L6 and EL34's using the standard taps, and could do a mismatch to push the reflected impedence up to 8k for 6V6's. Is my thinking right on this? I've heard that oversized OT's may sound a little sterile, but my assumption is that most of the tone's going to come from the preamp in this kind of an amp, so there may be a little more wiggle room. Thoughts?

Find yourself a Crate Turbo Valve 50 or 60 watt from the 90s perfect donor mine came out fantastic you could either use 6L6 or El34 it even had an auto bias feature! You can pick a complete donor for around 200.00! :) Perfectly good cheap American made Iron

Here is the info I have which is very informative and has one of the Heyboer HTS OT transformer numbers under BrownNote line card.

BrownNote used a relay transformer
