#124 cathode resistors and bypass caps...

Post by massygt6 »

I will try to bring the overtone preamp cathode resistors (cl1,cl2,od1 and od2) from 3.3k to 1.5k, as reported on the #124 schematic...also the caps on cl1 and cl2 will be replaced by 10uF...
I expect a bassier sound and more clipping in the lowend portion...am I wrong? Do you think it's a good idea to apply at the overtone layout?

That will only work if you make corresponding changes to the plate resistors (i.e. 100K across the board).

Try it if you want, but I think the general concensus is that the OD sound is smoother with the higher plate values like the overtone, or even 220/150/220/150. At least that's been my (limited) experience. I tried #124 preamp values and although the clean side was quite a gem, the OD was less satisfying. I ended up yanking the low plates in favor of high plates to smooth out the OD. YMMV.

Thanks for the advice...So if you're a clean player, ala Mayer, better to go with 100k/1.5k/10uF...
I'm still not completely satisfied by the OD tone, so I think that this direction is the wrong one to take...

Less satisfying in a living room, more satisfying with a band :D

Perhaps! :D

Funk - Do you honestly feel the OD of a low plate non-HRM sounds better than a high plate in the band setting?
