CDE WMF for ODS

Post by gtomax »

How's that for acronyms?

Has anyone built an ODS with WMF caps? They're far and away my favorite current production cap and sound phenomenal. I know it's not traditional and 6PS aren't hard to find but they're both polyester caps. WMFs are the closest I've found to the blue moldeds and in fender circuits I wouldn't use anything else so it should play nicely with the ODS design.

Thoughts or experiences?

Never used them, but given they are polyester film/foil I see no reason they won't be just fine electrically. The only drawback is the 630V are physically large, 15 x 35mm for 0.1 uF, and with axial leads they will require additional spacing between eyelets. I'd check carefully to see if they will fit.

I built my 102 with some Panasonic ECQ polyester caps. I know they are not the ones you are talking about but my 102 sounds pretty good with the Panasonic caps. You should try it out with the CDE WMF caps you might come up with a new ODS tone.

I used Panasonic WFL caps in my ODS lite build, which has the best sounding OD of all five of my ODS builds. It's not a rock solid data point, but I'm certainly willing to try these caps again!

I'm going for it and will report back. Starting a 124 build finally - pushed into it by finding a basically NOS 1961 Twin OT and the beautiful new black PCB from the UK headed here now

Originally discovered the WMFs for a 5E8-A build and was shocked with the quality. I built an Express with vintage orange drops and it sounds as it should but I'm going deep Fender soul for the 124 project.

Oh and a quad of 7581A's inbound as well!

Nice! I'm building the Erwin and Ryan SSS and I am going to use the Panasonic caps. I don't know how its going to sound but I love experimenting.
