Buying a two-rock and I need advice!

Post by ayushm64 »

Hey guys, I'm about to buy a two-rock and I'm torn between the new sterling signature and a 2003 custom reverb (not sure what version that makes it but it does have the drive channel, so V3?). I want that John Mayer tone but I'd like a little versatility beyond that if possible. Anyone know if the new sterling sig can get me there? Any advice would be helpful; its kind of a huge purchase for me

I think these days JM favours his SSS/Dumbleland style amps. Gets a solid clean tone and uses pedals for his overdrive tones.
Check out Johnmayergear on insta.

P.S: If you get the Sterling, post some gut shots :D

haha if I ever build up the courage to start fiddling with it, I will

Im just concerned bc the SSS can have kind of a harsh/aggressive tone by itself which Im pretty sure is why he pairs it with his two rock sig. I could be totally wrong here though...

I’ve built four SSS style builds for myself and they are far from harsh/aggressive.
I don’t have an ODS build, yet......

Hey man. I know we are talking on Instagram but I also wanted to chime in a little here. The Two Rock Sterling is more rounded than the actual Dumble's that John uses. Those amps are typically paired with another amp to round it out. I think the Sterling would be a great amp. The Ceriatone SSS is not bad either for a little less expensive with the same circuit as the original Two Rock Sterling/Custom Clean. Let us know what you get! Gut shots of the new sterling sig is always appreciated lololol

Thanks Ryan, I really appreciate your input, and yours too Aaron. Ive decided on going with the sterling and at some point in the future I'll build a clone of the custom reverb or buy one outright if I can scrape the funds together. Wish me luck!

update: I went with a 2008 Custom Clean. The used Sterling sold before I could grab it and I wasn't about to shell out for a new one. I got it for ~4200 + shipping/tax. Pretty good deal imo

Nice. Congrats on the new purchase.
The Custom Clean is the SSS #004 circuit.
