FET input sounds like?

What does the FET preamp input sound like?Having never played one I am curious.I need to decide if it's worth the effort to install on my next Overdrive Rocket Reverb build.

I wouldn't bother... doesn't really 'sound' like anything. It's a high impedance input for piezo pickups or maybe a mic. My experience is also that the lack of loading seems to cause a normal guitar to feed back earlier (not in a nice way).

+1. I put one in and my initial reaction was "Huh?" It must be one of those things where you put it in anticipating a specific application rather than installling it and wondering why you did. sh

I have one installed in my pure clone amp am the ONLY thing I have used it for was to hear what it sounds like. They are a bit noisey and add a little harshness.

The only way I could see using it is to

1. Use it as a switchable clean boost like TR does. This would require addressing the FET issues (the NTE 452 is not that quiet).

or

2. Adjust it so that it brings the level of a single coil guitar to the same level as a humbucker. I have tried this and it works ok and most of the noise disappears.

I have always been curious as to why MR D continued to put this FET input on the amps if it is so useless. If the amps are 'tailored to the client' and the clients put tape over the FET input, why keep including it in the amp design??

So perhaps,
1) I have not seen enough pictures (are there ODS amps without the FET?)
2) Its not really useless (some of MR D's clients DO use it)
3) He had some sonic/tone reason to keep including it in the design.
4) Other???
