Heritage G1265s

Post by Colossal »

I apologize if this has been discussed ad nauseum, but I have been doing some research of late regarding the Heritage 1265s. Rumor has it that the new production Ipswich made Heritage 1265s sound horrible and lost the magic. I also read something a while back where Robben Ford said something similar and this led to a limited partnership with Eminence to develop some kind of alternative, but that fizzled.

Marcus, if you read this...I remember you saying recently (I think in your Tweedle Dee thread) that the Heritage 1265 sucked out of the box, but you did not elaborate to say if it stopped sucking after a break-in period.

So if the Heritage 1265 is out of play, what are you guys using for 1x12 and 2x12s?

Thanks for any comments or help, guys.

I've got vintage G12-65's in my 2 x12. my comments were from a friend who bought two new ones and was horrified with the sound. Sold them immediately and bought some used ones.

I've got a new classic lead 80 waiting for me but haven't picked it up yet.

I'll post my results when I do.

I've heard some good things about them. Offhand, do you know if the Two Rock 1265 a customized WGS ET65? I have very good results with the Heritage 20W Greenback and Heritage G12H30, so still wondering if the current production Heritage 12-65s are clunkers (after being broken in).

So I will try to cover this from a live performance point of view. (Not my living room)

I've done side by side comparisons with the original 65's vs Heritage series. This was when the G-12H's were first re-issued.The pair I got were given to me already broken in and sounded IMO pretty good.My results were that the Heritage were surprisingly very similar to the originals and remember being pretty impressed with what Celestion was able to pull off given that speaker was such a heavy favorite with us here on TAG Dumble Robben Ford enthusiasts!. Many of the ODS tone hounds here even preferred the sound of the newer Heritages over the originals. If memory serves the big difference being the Newer G12 reissues were a bit brighter and a bit tighter,(however this is really what you would expect comparing a new speaker to one that is 30+ years old.)
The main problem I've found in my quest for the perfect ODS style speaker is one that is able sound good in all modes the ODS serves, being that it's an amp that generates a clean tone with an overdrive as well as a PAB. So if I found a speaker that sounds good in clean I didn't care for the OD or PAB tones. The main problem I have with the V-30's was I didn't care at all for the PAB/mid boost sound it gave me as the mid hump was borderline painful! at times at gig volumes (especially with my Skyliner's). This was disappointing for me at the time being I was a big V-30 fan and used them for years with my Marshalls!. The Heritage Greenbacks sounded killer in OD and PAB but didn't have the open top end and a tighter bottom that the 65's had which was better for cleans IMO. Lead 80's are a good platform and perfectly useable but kind of had the similar "mid hump" issues I had with the V-30's,just not as obvious. The EVL's seemed to be a neutral sounding speaker and because of this seemed to work well with the ODS platform all around with plenty of power handling so you can run a 100w ODS in a single 12L combo no problem! The Tonker was similar to the 65's and was an OK speaker (I think Two Rock used them) however I still prefer the 65's a bit better. Could be I am just more used to that Celestion sound. I also have an older Marshall 4X10 closed back cabinet with the 35's (10-inch G-12 equivalents) that sound KILLER and in some situations like even better than my 2 65's.
In the end it's all really a matter of taste and guitars what generation you have! etc etc.IMO the 65's are not a perfect speaker, however, given the Overdrive Special's broad tonal demands it places on a speaker. It does a decent job of covering everything nicely! IMO

What sounds best recorded is another topic altogether

I hope this helps :D
BTW. we used to put WGS stuff in some of our amps but found them to have issues with cone cry so we dropped them!.I don't know if they have straightened out those issues. Great guys to work with!!!

Tony,

Thanks for your thorough and thoughtful discussion! That is very helpful. I appreciate the comparison to other speakers as well. I really like the huge #102 clean through a pair of 65s; that huge bloom and pop and clarity, the pristine depth...

I don't know that a little extra brightness would be a bad thing with the reissue speakers, especially with humbuckers? The tightness for me would be important to get the articulation in the lower register I hear and like. For me the Heritage 20W Greenback has that plucky, alnico-like clean pop and chime that sounds almost like a Blue but the low end will not hold tight after a certain point of course, like the higher wattage speaker would. I like all that space and almost reverb-like quality with more depth than face.

Marcus, I'll look forward to your report on the Lead 80.

I Love the Heritage Greenbacks!!
Here would be my Dream Speaker if I could design one. Take the top end sizzle you get from the 65's (After break-in) with the mid-range throat (chime) you get from the Greenbacks combined with the punch from the 12L's and the compression (feel) of an old Alnico.. I'll take 4! 8)

This is the Robben Ford story from his guitar tech in 2008: http://www.online-discussion.com/Robben ... php?t=2739

I have old ones and more current ones and find them comparable after a break in period. I suppose you can get a bad speaker now and then.....

Like Tony alluded to, horses for courses. I have only tried one Warehouse speaker. Their knockoff of a Classic Lead and it was OK(btw - Classic Lead 80s are on sale at online retailers under $100 right now).

I also love the sound of the G12-65 after its broken in. I have one paired with a Celestion Gold in a 2x12 Traynor Dark Horse cabinet.
Sounds great with Overdrive 124 and my JM amp.
I built a 5e3 a while back and installed a G12-65 and it sounded amazing with that amp too. Sold it to a friend and he loved it.
Fender also used the G12-65 in their Eric Clapton 5e3 amp.
I think speakers are like food, you eat your favourite food all the time because you like it so much but then after eating it for so long you get tired and want something different! When I reach that point I turn to my Celestion Golds for a while!
Just my 2 cents.
