LM 340T wiring
Hi. I am a bit puzzled by the issue of wiring the LM304 t here. How is grounding being done, is it screwed to the ground in the back, also to the external ground, the to the screw on the socket? And is the LM340T the right part?

Me too. As shown the regulator is triple-redundant grounded since pin 2 and the mounting tab are electrically the same. There is no socket involved here, the leads are soldered to a terminal strip.

But the middle pin is ground and the terminal strip is screwed to ground in the middle strip?

That's right. It's very well grounded. It's grounded via the screw through the body mounting tab. It's also grounded through the terminal strip screw as you say. And it's grounded through the short wire that connects to the ground lug. It's grounded with three different methods. Any one of those is sufficient. Using all three methods insures that the regulator is very well grounded. Nothing wrong with that. You should do yours exactly the same.

belt and braces(suspenders)..and.... er….another belt

I've questioned this in the past too. It's no big deal to do as HAD did.

Re: LM 340T wiring
I think the reason for the extra grounding is that screwed connections can and do come undone over time, so any of the three, in theory could come undone, but all three are nearly impossible
