Same tubes, same bias, same EV speaker, same dumbleator settings, same reverb pedal. The camera is pretty much in the same spot on my bench.

The speaker cab is however different, and there is a backing track on the "before" track, but I still think you can hear some changes in the tone of my #102 after putting NOS parts in it.

I replaced the plate loads with MF7C, the NFB resistor to a 3K3 Piher, and a lot of the CF's with Draloric and Resista. None of the values changed more than 10%.

I still have NOS orange drops I may put in, but it already sounds pretty good!

I hear a difference in the mids, the amp is quieter and a more controllable, more sensitive to pick attack. It also is a lot less bright...which I like a lot. Also, I don't have the 68pf cap on the master of the amp.

Tony is right though, it's not mind blowing, but there are preferable differences! The amp already sounded great before I put the parts in, but now it sounds like I polished it up a bit!!

I do think the second after NOS sound clip has a more transparent and perhaps articulate tone which I prefer.

Having said that, a different cab ........ no backing track .......... could be factors in the tone sounding "better"? Or maybe it indeed was the NOS parts? Whatever the factor/s, I do like the tone.

THANKS for sharing the sound clips. The amp sounds great!

With respect, 10thtx

Very good, Taylor. I think both clips sound great. The OD on the 2nd seems a bit smoother.

I think its smoother too, and sweeter also, but I think the amp sounded great both ways. I was happy to have an even lower noise floor!!

Thanks guys for the great comments!!

Greg sorry to hijack...

Nice comparison Taylor. In some passages I like the new parts and some I like the old. The different cab could be a big difference though, as much as speakers can color the sound, so I don't think this is as controlled as I'd like to see...

Well the speaker is the same, but the cab in the before clip is 2.5" wider than the suede cab. At least the settings on the amp haven't changed much and I didn't touch the bias or anything else.

You might think this is even crazier...but I think the suede cabs actually sound better than tolexed cabs.. They sound like they have more breath behind the notes. So I do agree this is not as controlled as I would like to see either. Youtube kinda sucks the life out of the audio, but at least that is consistent!!!

If I can find a better 'before' clip with just the amp, we can continue to listen and test. I know Greg has lots of great clips of his Quinn with better quality audio...hopefully we can notice some differences in his amp.

I have clips recorded with an sm57 and also a condensor mic of the amp 'before', I'll get set up tomorrow and record a clip.

The differences may be too subtle to hear through the internet, but they are truly noticeable in person. In no way do you need NOS parts, its just another aspect of the craft, similar to using old glass.

Thanks a lot for the details

Did you use carbon or metal film for the nfb Piher?

I found a mepco of 93.1k for the plate load. Is it fine to use the smaller value as a replacement for 100k?
