Noisy reverb in your SSS,check this out

Post by talbany »

So I've been doing some tube swapping in my 002 SSS and thought I would share my findings!
Having played my SSS out now for about a year and apart from having to replace my driver tube (12AT) a couple times a year this amp has been a BEAST!! (4XKT100's) nothing like it and has been a wonderful amp so far.
The only issue I've had (and others) with the amp is the reverb side gets pretty noisy. After trying different tanks and cables and all kinds of tubes I finally got it to where it's fairly tolerable but still not quite able to drive the reverb/recovery on some gigs.
This past weekend I figured I would try to roll a few tubes in the reverb section again..I had in my stash several 80‘s/90‘s Beijing Chinese (square getter)..Installed them in both recovery and mixer sections and the noise is virtually gone!!..Now I can run the reverb all the way up with very little noise in the amp..Amazing!
Anyway I thought I would share my findings with those SSS owners out there with the same type issues.I imagine this could possibly help you Blackface guy's that have noisy reverbs in their amps as well..So check them out!..
BTW..These tubes also sound pretty good in V1 in the SSS.. They have a surprisingly nice clean tone as well, which is good for blues, funk and rhythm guitar. The clean sound can be described as “clear and round with balanced bass, mids and highs." They have a very nice treble that is never harsh and have an amazingly low noise floor!!.

Chinese Military Beijing 12AX7. Manufactured in the 1980‘s-1990‘s in the Beijing Factory in China and features a Solid Foil Square Getter, Triple-Micas, and Military Markings

Hope this helps!!

Tony how hot are you running the gain stages? I took all the bypass caps off my SSS reverb and they are dead quiet now. I had the same issue.
