these were made with Firmware 12.03 to Fw14.00 - I was a bit disappointed with the newer firmwares, because Fractal seems not interested in a improved non-hrm d-style sound. Most of the players aren't not really ready for tones that show their true beauty when addressing them with various string attack aka dynamic playing. Sad but true, most players just play it like a marshall - they miss approx. 80% of the beauty of the d-style concept. Of corse, it's just a digital device here......I have a lot more fun with tube amps and cabinets ;)

PS: Fw 18.12 was cool too..... SRV, please forgive me ;)

So true! Last time I let someone play one of mine, they hammered into it like it was a Valvestate and wondered what all the Dumble fuss was about?
Thanks for your clips too, I would love to take out a shoulder bag with all the lovely D tones and plug it in to a PA or cab and play. Maybe I should get a Kemper and sample my rig? Maybe I could rent one to try? Is that feasible do you think?

Thanks I just did Marcus, very impressive but I don't think you can profile your own amps like the Kemper. I would like to get my own amps into a laptop shoulder bag 8)

Sure Roger, I work with a couple of guys who use Kempers . THe helix will let you load cabinet impulse responses.

I'm going to get a helix at some point as it's worth it for me just for the FX. I have a line 6 M9 on one of my boards and it's very good. Stick it through a good tube amp and its great. The helix will add nice amp sounds as well when I'm working quickly in the studio or doing gig's with one of my bands where we have a silent stage and all IEM's

I like the idea of having a wet/dry/wet setup easily when recording via the 8 channel USB input, also being able to set FX chains via 4 loops into good amps live will be great.

I must apologise on behalf of myself and Marcus to Dumble Discussion for going all Gearpage on you guys.
I must say though I am keeping an open mind about the latest tech and that Helix is just friggin awesome!!!! I think I would adapt quite well as I often play without an amp and am used to the lack of amp dynamics/feel when performing. You just gotta work a bit harder!

Right back to LNFBs and cookin' blackplates 8)

Marcus, they wont - believe me! The Axe is pretty cool, but not even close to a real amp ;)

For me it was such an experiment how close I can get to my favorite tones! ;)

all the best

Paco,

I've had a Kemper now for 6 months and with regards to mainly working in the studio I think its fantastic.

Remember all theses 'modlers' sound like a mic'd /recorded amp and therefore work very well.

Quite often if you're in the room with your amp when recording when listening back to the recording in the control room you'll find it doesn't sound the same to you, which of course it can't, it's the3 sound of your rig though microphones. With the Kemper/Fractal the sound you're hearing is THE sound you'll get coming back EVERYTIME.

I've not tried an AXE but I can say the Kemper responds like a real amp to me.

Anyway I love my tube amps but Kemper is now a valuable part of my arsenal of equipment , I'll be using it today in the studio as the session requires me being in the same room as the singer so the Kemper will give me more control of spill.

Thanks, it's very interesting to hear about all your experiences with modelling!

I have actually taken things the other way the past few days, I have been playing my Strat and Tele through my stock 5E3 head and G12-65 cab using only a little HOF reverb from my board and NFB switched in.
I wanted to see how much I could do with a clean sound and just the simple amp controls and guitar controls and picking/fingers.
The answer is of course - a lot! So for now when I go out I just take my guitar and tuner if there is a tube amp of some kind to play.

Marcus, I will be in touch about a little recording project I want to do, perhaps you will have a spot in your schedule this year for me?

You can go a long way with a 5E3. I like a little reverb too. That and a good organic delay can create some magic with that amp.

I have been GASing for a Helix for some time now...

Well VK, I DID have a touch of delay in and it did sound magical but I wanted to keep it stripped right down, so I turned it off. It really is a great sounding amp that rewards some good playing, variations of dynamics and a bit of thoughtful phrasing. I really did sound like ME, the Strat sounded like itself and so did the Tele.
Which brings me back to the Kemper. Now if I profiled this amp, would it really have that same magic played or only sound good recorded?
Interesting times, for sure!

Here's the result of about 5 minutes of tweaking using BIAS for the first time. Was going for a high plate ODS drive tone. My friend Christian played his PRS SE in this clip. Definitely needs more work, but these modelers are pretty decent.

With the Kemper and any modelling device, the magic playing it live is totally dependent on your monitoring. If you want feedback, you're going to need a physical speaker of some kind to excite the strings , be that a wedge monitor or a speaker cab behind you. Good IEM's will give you magic but no feedback. Remember there's a powered version of the Kemper so you can plug in a regular guitar cab, or the other option is to use a FRFR powered cab (full range, flat response)

If you have a simple set up though then you might as well just take your combo. The Kemper works if you're doing a gig that requires a lot of sound changes , or you want say 3 different amps for your main sounds. Also the FX are very good to so you can get rid of your pedal board for most things.

If you have a boutique OD/Fuzz etc you can always profile that too with your amp profile.

For a grab 'n' go bar/club gig a small combo or head and 1x12 would still be my choice however if I got something like the Yamaha DXR10 or 12 then that might change things. I've got too much gear already though so let me remove that thought right now!!!

Roger, drop me a line and we'll have a chat about your project :D
