Dumbleator build

Post by Guy77 »

Just about finished building my dumbleator. I built it in a Hammond 12 x 8 x 2in chassis (WxDxH). Wires aren't tidied up yet and needs face plates, bright switch etc. but its up and running.
All I can say is WOW.....after listening to how much better my tone sounds I consider having one of these a must!!!

I can get a full rich overdrive tone at bedroom levels without losing any rich sounding harmonics!
Just spent a few minutes with it. I have lots to explore and learn still!

Cheers

Looks good and yes they work great.

Your transformers fit within the 2" chassis?

Yes the hammond 290WX transformer is just a bit shorter than 2 inches so it fit ok. I am using a choke from a twin reverb (194b) and it's also a bit less than 2 inches .

Nice :D

They're a really useful addition to any ODS amp, extra master volume and tone shaping. Just wish it wasn't another box to drag around!!

Which is why some of us, build the loop into the amp. :-) I'm not Robben Ford or an premier league player with lots of roadies etc. I use the D.-clone amps with my Blues Band.

For anyone who decieds to build the loop into the amp, you might find inspiration in below mentioned:

a) The amps' master vol is replaced by a fixed resistor network (470k/470k if you want master at noon setting - I like 11 o'clock).
You simply replace the master volume complete with bright cap. In order to simulate cable length you measure your favorite cable run - from amp to dumblelator - and use those values from master out to ground.
b) The Dumblelators 'return' pot is mounted in the amps' 'master volume hole.
c) I've placed the Dumblelator's 'Send' on the back of the amp. However its always in the same 11 o'clock position, so I might just as well replace it with a resistor network as well.

IMO this is a recepie for simpler gigging with a Dumble-clone amp.

Further inpiration can be found in user "Aflynt"'s post" Dumble in a box" or if you search for user "Heisthl" (Redplateamps).

thanks, that seems like a good idea :) only downside I can see is you need one for each amp, having a stand alone unit you can use it with whatever amp you like.

I put a passive loop on my JTM45 and can use the dumbleator with that for interesting possibilities :)

Also, check out ElectronAvalanche's SSS amp with a built in Dumblelator. He put the master volume inside his amp as a trimpot and used the return as the master volume.
There's a thread in here somewhere.......

Thanks for all the great information mentioned guys! I can definitely see how it makes sense to replace the master volume with a resistor and use the dumbleator master volume. I no longer need to adjust the amps Master any more, I just set it at about 1 or 2 o'clock and get all the sounds I need from the dumbleator. But as someone mentioned it would also be nice to have it portable for other amps with passive loops.

Cheers

Eventually I am going to build a small 4 space rack cabinet.
To house the D'lator, TC Elec. G Sharp delay unit, a power conditioner
and a spare space for something else.

Guy that is great to know, next time I'm going to use that Hammond PT and choke. My transformer was slightly taller so I had to use cork under the cover and hammer the area for the taller PT.

Mark, I attached a photo of the 290WX transformer fitting in the 2in tall hammond chassis with the cover on. Thought you would like to see that. It's close but it fits nice once you screw it down!

Cheers!
