New 70s hybrid build

Post by BarryW »

This is a 50w 70's hybrid build using some quality components, a nice old 60s Bassman OT and a Mag Comp PT. I've got it all together, so next I'll be off to the testing stage. I though I'd take this opportunity to toss some pix up here and say "thank you" to the many people that have contributed to the forum. So many folks have been so helpful in sharing their knowledge, and I for one certainly appreciate that. Thank you one and all!

I have decided the next amp I do is a 70s hybrid and this amp looks great. I am curious about the power transformer. Is it a 50w or 100w power transformer? I also noticed it has 12v taps for the relay. I am asking this because it looks like you used a CE Pedals chassis and a straight Bassman power transformer won't fit the hole spacing of that chassis.

Charlie,

I used a spare Magnetic Components Super Reverb transformer, so 40-50w. I used the 5v taps for the relay, very handy. I did have to drill a few extra holes, but I do that sort of thing all the time.

Sorry I couldn't reply sooner - I am no longer able to access this forum on my main home computer - Macs just don't work on this forum any longer.

Thanks Barry, I got it. You used the rectifier filament taps. How does the amp sound? I think your last post was the testing phase and yes since the site was hacked it is a bit of a pain logging in. :(

Sounds awesome! Once I figured out the quirks with the switches that have been documented previously, and added the 10K tell resistor on the bass pot, and got the FET set, it was a dead nuts winner. Love it!

Great Barry. I'm in. Yeah I noticed the layout(70s Hybrid) does not have a tail resistor on the bass pot but it looks like Brandon's amp does. I am still trying to decide if there is an advantage to using a precision power supply board. I have one left and I think I may save it for a #183 build.

I have one precision board left too - doing a 124 next, but the old style board is fine for me. I'll have to make one. Enjoy the build!
