Volume jump non HRM #124.

I love the sounds of the #124 non hrm amps. There is only one thing I don't like.

I get my tone dialled in just perfect on the Overdrive section with my Drive, Level controls and Overdrive trim (back of the amp) then when I switch back to the non overdrive setting I lose some volume and have to crank my guitar volume to get the volume back.

Has anyone tried having 2 Master volumes on these amps. one for the non overdrive side and one for the overdrive side?

I made my #124 variation with separate switchable Volumes and Masters for CL and OD. And - ohhhh - separate switchable Presences . IMO this is exactly what is lacking in this amp (sorry, in my amp ).

In the 124 and similar amps the "Ratio" control is used to balance the clean and OD volume. HRM amps seem to have separate masters which set the clean and OD volume independently. Different ways to accomplish the same thing, and converting from one system to the other is not difficult.

Its a 1M concentric Pot. I will need to rewire my relay so that it goes to 2 separate pots. I'll post back once I figure it out , just gathering parts for my dumbleator build as well, so many projects so little time lol..

You don't need another pot... Just turn the Ratio control down to lower the relative volume of the OD and turn the Master up to get the absolute volume back up where you want it

This is exactly right. Turning the guitar volume down when there is some gain present will result in a reduction of overdrive. However, when in clean mode, turning the guitar volume down results in a reduction of actual volume because there is no compression, or at least not as much, when in clean mode. You would encounter the same effect if you had separate masters for clean and overdrive modes.

I've done this on a few amps.

I just put a 250k resistor to ground off of the output of the second gain stage 150k resistor in the overdrive. From that into a 1MA pot for the overdrive master. It just simulates the same circuit with the Ratio control at half mass. Even that is kind of redundant though, just wire it up like an hrm.

Yes you guys are right turning the Ratio control (or in my case the Level , the Drive is on the left) down gives me exactly the effect I wanted, having the dual master would be redundant! Thank you , off to my dumbleator build!

If I may add to this discussion. I think by design when the level and drive are at 12 o'clock or so, the OD sound is louder than the clean. Most players like their lead sound louder than their clean although some like it at about the same volume. The thing is, turning the level pot to 12 o'clock or higher also adds low end and fattens up your lead sound. So where you set those controls may be as much about the tone you are going for as well as relative volume. I fine this especially the case with a Stratocaster.
