Small Special with Reverb? New here and need a helping hand.

Post by StudioNerd »

Hi! I'm new here. Well not really new, I have been frequenting the site for a few months now and was hoping to not start an account due to the security warnings I get when I try to access the site every time, but alas, I had to in order to post some questions about a build idea.

I have a ceriatone ODS that I partially built a few years back with a friend of mine, who knows way more about amps than I do. I really like the clean sound and use it to record and then put reverb on in Pro Tools. I want to make an amp that has those cleans but with a built in reverb.

After a good hour of searching around on here, the small special looks like my kind of amp. It has been somewhat helpful and somewhat confusing :) Doesn't seem like I can find info on the amp I would like to build. I want to build a 50 watt version, but with a built in reverb. Maybe something I can use 6v6 and 6l6 tubes in for the power. The chassis I have is cut for 4 12ax7 tubes and 3 octal tubes. I was first thinking I could just build an SSS or JM type 50w but the 3 tube reverb won't work with my chassis.

I am willing to take my time with this. I am also going to keep searching for what I am looking for. In the meantime I figured I would introduce myself and ask if anyone has any leads on the type of build I want. Thanks for reading my long winded inquiry!

Hi, Splgeo!

I appreciate your response. I am not looking to have OD in my build though. I supposed I could just bypass the OD circuit, but I would prefer to build something that is proven and not a draft.

Any other ideas?

There may be. I don't have chassis punches though.

I assume you're going to suggest building a JM or SSS?

I built a Dumble # 124 clone with spring reverb and love the sound of these amps with reverb. I added a traditional 2 tube reverb like the one used on the princeton reverb. I attached a layout of the reverb I used below, many thanks to Rob Robinette. Where it shows the dry signal bypass I changed it from 3.3M to 900K and used no capacitor. This way the signal does not loose its touch sensitivity and does not become sterile.
I used 5 preamp tubes altogether in a 16 in wide chassis . I installed this circuit just after the Master volume and before the effects loop.

Keep the iron hot

also don't the make a 9 pin tube socket that fits in a 8 pin hole. since you have three 8 pin hole you could do that to one
