I though the SSS was supposed to have a power section similar to an Ampeg SVT, with cathode followers after the PI.

That's the 150 watt/4x6550 SSS that you are talking about. Looks like the Sterling is based on the older, 100 watt/4x6l6 amps (if it is indeed a clone).

thats a good sign for me...I like SRV in '85 at the MJF, but at the ACL show in '89 his amp seemed a little bland in comparison...thats could have been him or the recordings; it could also have been changes in his amps- anyone know?

Wire job

Post by WholeToneMusic »

Nice wire job on the Sterling from the guys down at Two Rock. Looks very clean. You will just have to bite the bullet and buy them amp if you want the schematic. Your lucky they didn't goop any of the componets out like Dumble and some other makers.

And once you diagramed it, you could always take a magic marker and write "HAD 10/31/07 12:01 AM" on the chassis and put it back on eBay for twice what you paid for it. :D

Great sounding amp Tommy, might just want one of those someday. As for Sterling, GREAT sounding amp also, but all these seems to be more of variations of the theme than the real deal. There are few key elements to the formula not much discussed here.

Hi Metalhead,

What are those 'Key Elements" that you mentioned? I'm still working/tweaking to get my SSS derivative singing....

Please enlighten us,

Now you make me wonder metalhead!

Some of us have been working very hard over past years to try and bring this together. Any meager hints you could offer?

Does the bypass switch have an effect on the hi filter only or both the high and low. Where would these two filter switches connect to? Can anyone here identify the values on the two filter switches? Is there one tube for reverb? What do the two eq settings on the switch do? So with 4x 6550 and cathode followers and the mods that are listed on the bm pi sss post would this be close to the SRV SSS?
