50w 102 (Ford) build, output TX question

Post by MKB »

Hi all, am in the very early (parts gathering) stages of a 102 Ford type amp, only with 50W output (6L6's). Am mulling over which output TX to use. I have two at hand that I could use:

1) Late sixties Bassman head OT

2) Very nice repro plexi Marshall OT with the output taps, specified for EL34's

I noticed that the documents say that the RF 102 has a Twin OT, and it appears the pics of his amp do not show an impedance switch, yet most of the schematics show an impedance switch. IIRC a standard Twin OT only has a single 4 ohm output tap (as does my Bassman OT).

I'm a bit nervous about using the Marshall OT, am afraid it may be a bit brighter sounding than the Bassman and I don't want that. Also there may be a bit of mismatch from specified output impedance using 6L6's in place of the EL34's, but this is probably a minor concern. Finally, I will need to pull this out of an amp, and I'd rather not do that if there is a significant sonic advantage to the Bassman TX.

All you that have built 102's, any suggestions on which I should use? I have been working on tube amps for decades, and realize the impedance tap issue is not really a big deal, at least with the Fender TX's.

Finally, does anyone know what impedance RF's cab is? Maybe two 8 ohm speakers in parallel for the proper impedance for a Twin OT?

Thanks for all replies!

I love their transfomers. I use them for special one-off build etc etc.

But my mainstream transformers come from Heyboer.
