Allen Amps kit for homebrew?

Post by TimS »

What do you guys think about using an Allen Amps kit as a foundation for a homebrew Dumble-style amp? You'd probably want to replace some of the components, but you get a prepunched chassis, transformers, head cab, and all the little stuff you need for an amp build (sockets, pots, jacks, etc.), all from one source.

Is this a good idea, or is there a better way to go for those of us who lack the tools and experience to punch a chassis and build a cab?

And by "better", I mean "less expensive but of similar quality".

If you can wait 45 or so days I can supply you with a chassis and boards and a cab. You'll have to get all your own little components.

In the past I have used the Dave Allen stuff, It came out pretty good, but for the money the chassis seem a bit thin, plus they're folded and not welded.

Thanks, that's good to know. Is there any place you can recommend that sells higher quality prepunched chassis?

Your chassis/board run sounds like a great deal, and I wish I would have found this forum before ordering my D'Lite kit (I'm sure I'll be very happy with it, but it sounds like I could have saved a few hundred bucks buying that stuff from you and sourcing the rest of the parts myself). The only problem is that I was thinking of doing something a little different for my second build - something with two independent channels, one of them being a Dumble circuit - and it appears that your setup is for a standard ODS. Allen's Encore kit would have given me the extra tubes and pot holes for a second channel.

I'll definitely give your offer some thought, though. There's enough variation in ODS circuits that I could probably find use for two of them, and if not I can always gut one and rebuild it as something else.

I don't think my stuff would save you any $, to do one right takes about $900.

Try ceriatone.com for your chassis, Nik has done 1-off's for me before.
