What does a Tele love - low plate or high plate?
I'm learning all about the different Dumble's and ended up deciding on a classic #124. Now, as I've been researching, sourcing parts etc, I'm learning more differences between the amps and am now wondering is the #124 actually best suited to a Telecaster (which I play).
I read that the #124 is a low plate amp and wonder how that will sound. Is it perhaps better to look into #183?
For those Tele players, what's your experience with Dumble amps and what do you find is the ultimate marriage between Tele and Dumble?

Here are some opinions for you to wade through: https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.ph ... 44&start=0
Re: What does a Tele love - low plate or high plate?
Robben Ford using his tele sounds great with his 102... but I guess it's always about the player at the end.

Re: What does a Tele love - low plate or high plate?
Be aware that Robben's Tele has a Lollar rewind pickup in the bridge, popular opinion says it is a bit hotter than the stock pickup.

IMO A good Tele sounds good with a high or a low plate (kind of straddles a Les Paul and a Strat) However we all know how some of the cheaper Tele's can get" bright and sterile" So you have to get a good one especially with the mid heavy Skyline stacks!!

Any thoughts on wood selection for a Tele in this regard? Very light swamp ash? Sugar Pine? You want the twang, clang, and sustain, but without excessive shrillness or wiry bite.

Some of the best sounding Tele's I have played were yes Swamp Ash with Nitro finishes and of coarse old style bridge plate & brass saddles...Colossal wrote:Tony, talbany wrote:IMO Tele's are the one guitar that sounds good with a high or a low plate (kind of straddles a Les Paul and a Strat) However we all know how some of the cheaper Tele's can get" bright and sterile" So you have to get a good one especially with the mid heavy Skyline stacks!!![]()

To be honest I've only played a handful of Tele's that sounded good to me!! Tom Principato's being one of the best!! 60's rosewood

Check out the new Don Mare Twangzilla PU for fantastic RF tones. His 60 tele also has threaded steel saddles. My high plate 102 kills with a tele.

Thanks all and Max, that's great info to wade through. I do agree that cheaper tele's can be exposed for what they are, particularly on a Dumble.
I'm still finding it hard to settle on a Dumble inspired build, but I'm taking my time with this one. I quess at the end of the day it's fairly easy to change components.
