Dig the clips!!! 8) I like dry clips too - but I appreciate that you detailed your signal chain.

While clip "standards" are nice, I think it's more important to detail what you used and how you recorded it. Nice job!!

Either way, THANKS for taking the time to post your work!
What is the first (painful) impression? The impression is that American movies and shows are LOADED with arrogant, vulgar, ¨four letter word¨ saturated, primitive, ... language! European movies, TV shows, and such ... have NONE of that.

Jeez..... I just have one question "skyboltone"..... exactly what are you trying to achieve coming in this thread ten days after things have settled and stirring it up again? You attempt to toss out insults and completely fail in whatever your (late) intention was.

Odds are you've read and had ample time to respond and chose not to! Now this, and then add on the request to Omar....... simply lame and not very "brotherly" of you.

Actually, give it some thought and I'm sure you'd agree your posts were unnecessary and actually rather pointless! I'd hope you realize your dialect certainly shows a laps in intellect regarding your attack!

I say we get over any perceived hostility and move forward. I hope "tonegeek" will post more clips and add more information regarding the "meat & potatoes" of his build and clips! Just include some dry ones for us "noobs"!

dogears wrote:Hi Sven,

While I totally agree with you that I prefer to hear clips that don't use an OD pedal, I think the problem is the way you requested.

The OP offered a clip up that he obviously was proud of, where he for better or worse exposes his playing for us. (Good IMO) You kind of beat him down. Maybe had you complimented him and then politely requested a dry clip, things would be different. Your tone was quite combative from the start. Just my 2c.

Once again, I do agree with you fwiw. I always like to hear just the amp OD. Furthermore, I have never felt the need to use and OD or boost of any kind in front of any of my amps, including HRM.
Greetings,

Thanks for this kind, moderate and polite reaction. As for ¨beating anyone down¨, I doubt that very much, as it was rather obvious from my original comment. It was the other way around, my reasonable request and recommendation about standards and usual preferrences, was met with personal commentary that had absolutely nothing to do with the nature of the debate and request.

However, what is bad about it, is that the whole matter was kinda left alone as a perhaps sharp debate, but without need for further continuation. All of a sudden, ten days later (!!!), I had someone here attempt further insults and ¨second round¨ of lynching mob, telling me to use spellchecker, learn some manners, and so on and so forth. That was really uncalled for, altogether. I hope you agree.

And, just my last statement on this subject. Neither engineering, nor designing, nor sound recording, ... nothing, would ever advance if people were fobidden (or exposed to personal insults) to voice different opinions and write some constructive recommendations about recording or any other standards that make comparisons of sound clips, amp designs and so on ... more USEFUL to the forum etc.

In other words, I really do not think that I am attending a ¨self esteem improvement¨ psychological group therapy session here, but, rather, I assumed the stance that I am communicating with grown men who can take one or two comments that are not exactly what they usually expect to hear or read from someone else. I thought that I am communicating with people who can engage in argument about technical merits of one or other method of doing things, without reacting with arrogance. It is incerdible that I would write something like: recording whould be done ¨dry¨, without pedals, with a simple mic and micing technique, in order that we can all indeed COMPARE the sounds of different amps - and than get into this quagamire of personal comments as a result of my intervention. It is really amazing!

As for the comments by one or two other people, I shall not honor them with response; their reaction is below my level of communicating.

All the best,

Sven

P.S. I think that perhaps at least 50 (and even much more?) million Americans cannot spell well enough, and some of them even speak, English language (and I do not only mean Hispanics, Chinese, Koreans, many African Americans from ¨downtown¨ areas, but others as well ...). Fortunately, that qualification does not include (most) members of this forum - so, I really do not see why was my spelling problematic to someone.

I loved the clip! You have a great formula for an amp build. We would all love to hear, see and read more details if you wish to share them. 8)

"corksniffers..." sorry but, I had to laugh at that comment

attached is what I consider a well timed joke.
Works for me BobW. I intend to. I'm careing for my father who has metastatic melanoma and I'm apt to say just about anythng right about now. Pretty pissed off actually. For the about 50% of you that are not from around here please believe me when I say that I don't count xenophobia as one of my character issues. I got lots of them though.

As my Grandmother used to say, "there's only just two things I can't stand. Prejudice and Texans". That's a joke for those of you who need to know.

If you feel like experimenting try less filtering on the PS rail. If you're using Orange drops in the clean section try Xicon 630v MPPs. Other things (as stated several times before) Vishay/Dale RD series plate resistors and metal oxide Cathode resistors. Some say the signal path resistors should be all carbon types. Ceramic disc caps for the pf values (NO MICA). etc. Once you get the clean sound to have overtones like a bell, the OD has a lot more to work with and hopefully the one signature Dumble sound that no other amp can duplicate comes through.
+1. Just swapped the ODs for Xicon MPPs of the same values in the clean channel of my Deluxe Reverb II this weekend. Sound is much clearer. I can now leave the bright switch off. It also makes a huge difference if you use overdrive pedals in front of the amp. With the ODs the overdriven sound was very middy without the bright switch pushed on. With the MPPs it's just right. I still have the Silver Mica treble cap in there since I do not have 250pf ceramic caps anymore - where can I get them except from Mouser?
The jury is still out on whether I keep the ODs in my Bandmaster but that amp has 10" speakers.

My experiences are the opposite. My amps have PS Orange Drops. A friend and I A/Bed our builds. Same exact amps, same iron, etc. His was all MPP mine PS OD. My amp sounded much much fuller 3D and better in every way. We tried swapping tubes as a possibility too. I use them since I spent 4 years comparing parts on a daily basis and they have the best tone for me.

If you need top change the ODs to improve the tone, there is something else off on the build. Could be that a non Dumble style circuit like your Deluxe is just a different beast.

If you find that you have to deviate from the usual parts in a Dumble circuit, then that should indicate other issues. Just sayin'....

Just to clarify I used the 715P series ODs. Not the 417s. That may make a difference.

One would think that would be a valid comparison, but alas, things are not always so simple. I think most builders whom I've spoken with have experienced the same thing: sometimes an amp turns out to be superior sounding, or kind of dead sounding... and that's pretty much regardless of what one does to it. I had two amps I built which were identical in every respect, yet one was great sounding compared to the other. I tried changing everything in both, and they pretty much stayed the same: one sounded great, the other was OK. I was mentioning that to Chris S. the other day, and he had a quote from Ken Fisher that went something like "If after finishing an amp it doesn't sound magical, then you have to start all over again from the very beginning." If tolerance stacking is not enough to cause differences like this, then there's always the issues of the solder joints, right? No two are the same.

Having said all of the aboove, I am willing to give the polyester OD caps a try. I have tried just about everything else and the Xicon MPPs are my favorites so far, but things could get better from there. Interestingly, two of the busiest builders in this forum have opposing views on this: one swears by the polyester ODs, the other by the Xicons... :D
