Hired an engineer to record Quinn 183 clone with Pro tools.

I have been bashed more than a few times for my recording quality over the years, and its not for a lack of trying. I always used a roland recorder, because they were failry simple to operate for someone with no recording experience myself. last week, I picked up an Avid interface and Pro tools 9, and started the process of less guitar playing, and more time figuring out how to use a computer, and boy does it stink! So I broke down and hired a sound engineer to come in and help me for an hour and a half today. After going through all the basics, we had time to do one quick demo. He felt a bit "limited" with my one SM57 straight into the computer, but that is what I have! Anyway, I like what came out FAR more than anything I have done. Gone is the muddiness, but I do still hear SOME clipping. Lots of nice "chirp" all over the place. I got the feeling with as little as 2-3 trys, this guy could have nailed any tone I wanted. He has worked with John Mayer and some other pretty impressive names over the last 6 years, and is still in his mid 20s. I wish him the best, and wish i had some more $$ to keep him here for a few more hours. Anyway, this was done in the last 10 minutes he was here, and gives the best example of the Quinns and 183s tones i have heard yet. At least the, clean type of overdrive it gives that I dig so much. As always, sorry for any clams in the playing, but it was decent seeing I was put on the spot, and for a Strat into a Dumble, I REALLY love the tone! Yep Tag big difference, the chirp and bark is there, sounded great with the Strat.

Where did you positition the mic on the speaker?

- pointing directly at the cone or between edge and cone?
- Angled or straight?
- close up to the grill or a feet from it

Thanks for checking it out! The mic was slightly off center at a slight angle away from the center, right against the grill cloth. (G12 H30s, Mesa 4/12 cab) He usually uses three different mics at three different points. To watch how fast he worked and adjusted things to get it to sound so close to what we heard in the room was amazing. He CUT a few EQ spots, where I would have added in others, and added just the right amount of verb and delay so that you can barely hear it, but it sounded just like my room. Really amazing, and definitely an art form in itself. To watch him hit the EQ, scroll up and down and know exactly what frequencies to adjust blew me away. I am sure you guys are a lot better at that than I am. I just know how to adjust a bass, mid and treble knob.

Thanks for infor regarding mic placement.

Equlizing in a DAW is a funny thing. a few db's goes a long way and a few narrow eq cuts are usually the way to go for guitars, plus a 100-150 hz high pass eq - aroung depending on how busy the mix is.

It took me years to develop the circular breathing technique, and I intend to use it.

The thing I found difficult in recording on a PC with not the best speakers was the EQ.
So that it sounded good playing back on a quality stereo system.

So I suppose having good monitors hooked up to the PC would help.

I have a really good pair of Yamaha studio monitors I always use. It always amazes me how mixing on those, then playing back through the computer speakers changes things up. You really need a separate mix for each.
