#183 build thread started!

I've been thinking about #183 for a long time and I've finally decided to do it. I spent a couple hours today on a scavenger hunt around the shop looking for parts. I found TONS of stuff!!

NOS treble pot (same part as in 183). The rest are Alphas. I will probably use Piher CF in most of the signal path and mepco electra and NOS NTE baby blues for the plates.

I'm trying to figure out how low I can go on the filtering. I have a lot of electrolytics, but nothing that matches up.

Right now I'm thinking 220uf in series (vs 330uf) for the main B+ resevoir. Then I have 22uf caps...but they might be too low as the original board has 47ufs in series...I would be under 50%..

Do you need that much filtering with EL34's?? I can grap the 47uf radials but if i didn't have to, it would probably save me $30.

I have a bunch of new production OD's so I'm going to use them instead of NOS...or maybe a mix...we'll see what I have in my stock.

This chassis is one I bought used from a member early 2011 when I stared doing the Dumble cabs...it banged up but it will be a cool 'relic #183'. My plan is to do a matching headshell to the real thing.

I haven't decided on the FET yet.

Quit cranking out those cabinets and maybe you can build some amps for a change....lol

1. IIRC, 183 only had around 160uF measured on the first cap bank, IMHO you don't have to chase the extra 50uF. I used 220's and never looked back.
2. Put the blue NTE's on the plates.
3. Single 22uF axials are fine, I would measure them though, but my preference would be high precision setup.
4. Keep in mind 183 is just a high plate Skyliner with high value 250k drive pots, no lnfb, Marshall iron and EL34 glass.
5. Get 3 GE JAN 12AX7WA short plate preamp tubes.

Those 22ufs are radials...so in the precision supply they will only be 11uf, correct? That seems way low. Thoughts?

Is it going to sound a lot different than my 102? Maybe I should go in a slightly different direction. I didn't realize they were both skyline.

Baby blues are in limited supply, I can get new production pretty easily. I have a couple Q-lines too.

I think TM meant to use 22uf axial if you have them...
Hit mouser for some radial 47's or fetch some 22uf/500v axial and you'd be good to go.

it's a different Skyliner voicing; the lack of LNFB on V1, terribly low value of snubber on V2, 272K drive pot sets the character, with the Marshall OT and glass being the icing on the cake. It's really responsive to pick attack and doesn't hide a thing.

It's full of NTE's actualIy, send you the grid bias, cathode values if you wish. Maybe I'll just send you a 183 package.

I have stalled a little at the moment on mine, just been slowly assembling a Marshall combo cab in BRG/gold, but I screwed up the black and cream grille cloth by misting it - it ran so I need to get some more.

I love your component choice BTW, great advice from TM too

Check out these NTE colorband resistors. IIRC these are supposed to be top notch. I don't think I have a full set for all the plates, I need to measure these today.

Taylor, I've used those before. They were actually made Corning, rebranded as RCA, Sylvania and I imagine NTE.The current of that series is made by Dale. The ones in #183 were a different NTE brand/type. Here's my first quad 6v6 build with RCA & Sylvania's from the 80's & 90's.

I'd stick with NTE flameproofs for the plates and cathodes.
