That aluminum piping is just 3/4 x 1/8" stock polished up and secured to the inside of the cab. You must have that across the pond!rogb wrote:No ally piping here in the UK, are you crazy![]()
I've done it no piping, white and gold were my options so I went naked.
Cloth is just drying out now...
Sol at Solsound www.solsound.com where I get my cab parts agreed the plain look was good.
Just need to fit the speaker and rear baffle, so hopefully some pics tomorrow

I thought it was special metal piping ! Duh! No wonder I couldn't find any
When I zoomed the photo up in Photoshop I could see it was regular ally!
I bought some flat bar stock for the chassis aperture but I will go back and get some more so I can have "that special piping look" too.
Looks like a metal polishing session tomorrow then...

Re: Why DID HAD use suede on his amps?
just make sure that your cab is nice and square, and you'll probably have to trim down the baffle...which might not be fun if you already put the vox on it.
The good news is, you only have to polish the edge for the piping look, since its the only side exposed.

Just a couple of quick pics, sorry about the quality... I'll do some better ones when I document the build.
I decided not go with the piping in the end and just left it plain and simple.

I wonder if it's part of the Radio Shack/Tandy connection?
One stop shopping. I bet HAD even had a battery club card back in the day.

Re: Why DID HAD use suede on his amps?
Rog that looks awesome!
When you look at the construction of the cabinets it is obvious that Dumble made them with the intention of each one going on a tour of the world. Even the back panels of the heads are locked in with 5 screws across the bottom (most production amps now have none). And the 2x12's have 7 screws across the top and bottom of his back panels.
Some of the pictures of the baffle mounts shows just as many screws inside. And also some of the chassis mounts have screws all along the edges. The guy built these amps to withstand anything. I see the suede as a way to make them even more durable. I can rip a piece of tolex with my bare hands. I can barely stretch of piece of suede.
Also, these amps were selling for big bucks, so why not cover them with the best? Weren't suede and leather jackets really popular during Dumbles prime build era?
All of my personal cabinets are suede and I don't think I'll go back...but I am a man of class and would have it no other way.

Re: Why DID HAD use suede on his amps?
Thanks Taylor, that really means a lot to me, I have put many hours in on this cab. When I put the last top trim screw on the left, I slipped and scratched the ally and chassis - tired old eyes and hands = sad moment.
Fingerjointed 18mm Baltic birch, no screws needed at the joins. I would imagine this will easily outlast me
On the speaker baffle I think there are 15 screws alone.
Damn I think I am hooked on suede too now - it looks so classy compared to tolex, what have you done
Next week I will go through the parts inventory and see what I need to populate the boards, I have plenty to hand so I can et started soon!
I think I am going to get a special Mercury OT recommended to me by a top builder - mmm.....

On the subject of aluminum piping...check this set out I finished today.
Carbon fiber covers, bluesbreaker cloth, aluminum piping all around both baffles.
If the terminator had a Dumble, this is what it would look like.

Sorry to derail...suede convo carry on. Here's a new design with a Dumbleator spot on the bottom, royal blue suede, vox.

And here's SSS #004's new 2x12 matching cabinet! Turquoise suede, mind blowingly awesome. Loaded with EV12S.

Great additions to the suede fest Taylor, love the "blue suede shoes" look,
and the Bluesbreaker theme. Turquoise too, all awesome!
The ally piping is something I would definitely try in the future, but as you said, it would need the baffle stripping and completely redoing and mine looked nice and understated as it was.
I'll be interested to see the reaction of the London crowd I play with, they don't see too many suede amps I guess

Yeah man I have LOTS of suede pics... I'm happy I was able to share it with you all the way in London.
So anyway, what did you use for glue?

Excellent to use really strong and doesn't soak through.
Re: Why DID HAD use suede on his amps?
Late to the party, but here's a couple of suede rigs i did last year. I used a fabric adhesive called Fabri-tac. Good stuff and a bit easier to work with than contact adhesives.
