Peavey Windsor 100 watt into a 102 - 124 - 183

Post by guitardude57 »

I recently swapped a Spitfire, (I built out of a 1964 Hammond organ Reverb amp) for a Doug Hammond style converted 100 watt Windsor.
If the mod was a drastic improvement from the oem amp... this thing must have really sounded horrible stock. It sounds like ass to me as is now.

So, it has some beefy trannies (Taiwanese, I believe) and a nice large Hammond choke.
The chassis is huge, and could allow for any number of additional novels to be added for whatever... I could even cut down the chassis on one end to make it a little less wide.

Are these trannies decent enough for a one hundred series D amp?

My Bassman 70 convert has been awesome, ready for another build.

Thoughts and suggestions welcome.
Mike

Interesting... no choke.
And the trannies are not 90 degrees from each other.

Which serial number is this?

Thanks, Mike

All I know... this Windsor is sick loud.
If it is going to be loud... it might as well sound good!

Can anyone tell me what the primary Z of the OT on this tranny is?
Curious as to what possible output tube choices could be made besides EL 34's.

Thanks, Mike

Just noticed your post, so sorry for the late comment. I picked up a windsor head for less than $200 all in. Can't source a chassis, power and output transformer and 4 new issue Mullard el34 tubes (russian I am sure) and preamp tubes for that kind of scratch anywhere. I could not pass it up.
I currently have stripped it out and begun a version of the Marshall Slash AFD style amp with a foot switchable extra gain tube. Here is a picture of its current state. There is so much room in there to work, its like the old US cars from the 60's with the straight line 6 cylinder engines in a huge engine bay (boy am I showing my age). However I am considering it a platform for something else like a Dumble build or similar. For a Marshall style build however, these are ripe for a gutting and rebuild.

Good for you! $200 is a good deal. Got mine on a swap.
There is so much room in there, you could put several more novels in there and have 2 or 3 pre amp circuits, and still have room for switching relays, and parking for a small car.
