New 2X6L6 build-Quick clip added

Post by B »

Edit: (I've decided to just build a 6L6 based amp)

I plan to build it from the "D'lite tweaked layout" with the corrections made (and the proper variations for a 2x6L6 power amp) .I don't plan to add the relays for now, and add them as a winter project.

I would like to build it as a combo with a WGS et65.
I'm strictly a bedroom player, slinging together this amp on a shoestring budget. Any help and ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Also, I built this Single ended wee beasty some time ago, but have since been married, bought a house, and had a son, So whatever amp building knowledge I had is now gone, I feel like i'm starting over again.

Personally B, I would use a power transformer that would support both 6L6 and 6V6's. You would be covered if down the road you wanted to try 6L6's. The cost difference is nomimal and if you have to cut a mounting anyway, why not do it only once. FWIW, my first D style build was a 50W "Tweaked" D'lite.

Thanks for the reply ToneMerc, Do you have any recommendations for transformers for a build like that?

I'm having issues finding a PT with dual secondary windings, and would a vibrolux OT work with this build? Also, I built the chassis with two power tube holes, and four preamp holes, So it would need to run a built in D'lator.

Edit: I found this for a Super reverb/bassman on MC site.

What's adequate PT specs to do either tube type? I've been eying the Allen TP25 at 310-0-310 @150mA. Fits the Mini Chassis they sell, Champ sized and a promising looking platform for a Small(er) Special with just a pair of output tubes. (A more ambitious builder would go ODS in there.)

My rule of thumb for a Fender style PT is a min of 65-70mA for each 6V6 and a min 100mA per 6L6.

Something around 325@ 200-240mA would be great for a pair of 6L6's.

I had Heyboer wind me a a custom Vibrolux PT , but I wanted slight higher voltages. Last I checked it has around 465V on the plates.

IIRC, my Vibro PT was 355-0-45-355 @ 250mA

That Basmman PT is fine(use 610V tap) and down the roadyou can run two G5V-H1 Omron 5 volt relays from the rectified 5V tap.

I have recently built a D'Lite type with 4X6V6, switchable to 2X6V6.
I used this OPT:
http://store.triodestore.com/baheproreupo.html
rebranded as a New Sensor. It works fine, and has plenty of iron so that I can put 2X6L6 in if I want.

Thanks for the suggestion, After spending more time looking, I'm going to go with 2x6L6 for the power side. I was just looking at the OT you posted!

Now to sort the power transformer out. I'm thinking MC 40-18073 PT may be alright for my needs, I'm not sure if it'll run 2x6L6 and 4x12A_7 (I plan on building in a D'lator).

This one gives you a little more current handling capacity, as the cost of a 5V tap, which I'm guessing you were going to use for relays.
If so, a separate filament transformer for relays is inexpensive. Mouser has them, and other sources also.
If you don't need the 5V tap, 18005 is a little better I think.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I went ahead and ordered the 40-18005 PT and the 40-18001 OT. In the end I decided the extra amperage from the PT would be worth not having the 5V taps.

Welcome to the Amp Garage B.

Could you do us a favor and put your location in your profile.

That will help us recommend components to you that may be local or online.

Thanks,

Does Radio Shack still stock the little transformer many (Even Alexander?) use for the relays? A quick look on RS website only has one that 12.6 volts? Didn't they used to stock 6 volts transformers?

Regards and thanks,

You can use an auxiliary filament transformer. They are not hard to find. I don't think RS has the 6v. I would grab a PT with a 5v recto tap, what's better than that?
