Relay reliability?

Post by Mark »

Hi

I'm wondering if it is better to solder the relays directly into the PCB's or to use sockets. If the relays were to break down every couple of years the sockets would be the trick.

If the relays don't break down then soldering directly into the board would be the best option as it would eliminate possibly getting a bad mechanical joint from the socket.

Thanks for your help.
Yours Sincerely

Doug has some on the bottom of his page at Hoffman's, many guys over there use the sockets just because it is easier to replace as you mentioned. I haven't used amp relays, I used them in automotive use and due to they're high amperage load in that situation (for a electric cooling fan in my hot rod I had) they were pretty susceptible to burning out. Obviously the channel switching relays don't see that sort of current, none the less when I get around to building a Dumble style amp I'm pretty sure I'll use them.

If you are worried about the relay falling out of the socket, you can put a dab of silicon to hold it to the socket or use a small zip tie.
