Anyone Used Kiwame Resistors In Dumble Clone?

Post by secretriches »

I know you've discussed capacitors and resistors before, but I sense that the 2W (not available in 1 or 1/2 watt) Kiwame carbon film resistors might be an ideal compliment for the "Dumble Sound". Has anyone used all Kiwame's instead of the typical Xicon Carbon Film's? If not, I will probably use them in my first Dumble build but it will be awhile before I get there. Here's the US source at http://www.percyaudio.com and the Canadian source at http://www.partsconnexion.com for purchasing Kiwame resistors. Those who have used these resistors claim they are warm and lush and at 2 watts, they should provide adequate thermal noise reduction. Any opinions or experience? Do any of you feel or know that these would be a reasonable resistor to use in a Dumble Clone even at 2 watts?

I have never used Kiwames in any of my builds to date.

Other than space concerns, there shouldn't be any problem using 2W CF in place of the 1W CF Xicon type.

However, I believe that V1 and V2 plate resistors of the metal film variety are important for that Dumble tone.

Good luck!

I haven't built a Dumble yet, but I've used the Kiwames a fair bit. First, they are dead quiet. Sonically, I think they're richer sounding than most CFs. I've used them in some mods as cathode resistors and found them to reduce noise even in that application. Besides, they're cool looking, though I heard they changed from red to some icky green...

The only beef I have with them is cost. Kiwame will only license one retailer per country to cut out competition and keep prices up. I've gotten them from both the US and the Canadian dealers with good service.

I think the color has been the same from the beginning. At least the couple I got some while ago from (Triode Supply?) in some introductory pricing deal had the same light green color.
